I have thermocouple bulk wire sourced. Insulated to withstand 2000F.

Got a lot cost, easy to mount probe tip figured out for the pad.

Sourced a low cost stepper motor and MCU with precision analog for the gauge.

Gage face spec'd out. Will post a pic soon.

You need to add an orange section. Also, remember that heat range depends on pad types. Some totally love 1000F while others melt at that temp.

Since this is for racing pads we can focus on those. From the graphs I posted, racing pads like to operate between 500F and 1200F. It's a generalization but you need to start somewhere. I'm considering 400F at 9 o'clock, 800F at 12 o'clock and 1200F at 3 o'clock.

To your comment 1200F - 1400F could be orange and 1400F - 1600F would be red.

Thanks for the input.

The other alternative is a programmable RGB LED ring. That has possibilities and makes the gauge more useful, as in for street pads as well. Looking into this.

So, here's the new and improved gauge face. Has 4 programmable colors for brake state:

Blue : Cold
Green: Operating temp
Yellow: Upper limit of operating temp
Red: Exceeding operating temp

Color range is programmed by turning knob on face of the gauge. Press in on knob to change color being programmed. Example:

Press knob for 2 sec to enter programming mode
Blue upper limit starts flashing
Turn knob to set blue upper limit
Click knob
Green upper limit starts flashing
Turn knob to set green upper limit
Click knob. Yellow upper limit starts flashing
Turn knob to set yellow upper limit
Click to exit program mode. LEDs stop flashing

Gauge remembers color settings when car is powered down. You only have to program it once for any pad type.

Comments?

that looks much easier to comprehend at a glance than the first one or even a digital display

What is the response time like?

I have a good bit of brake temp data from MX-5 ST cars if you want to check it out, just to see what the temps do.

Response time will be in ~1 millisecond, so you will have the feel of a true analog gauge.

Would definitely like to see that data. Please PM it to me.

Come to think of it, I'll add a 0-5V brake temp output so the gauge can be monitored and data logged by any racing dash. Like the idea?

Color LED ring + driver electronics will add $40 to gauge resale. Ouch. I think that idea goes into "nice to have" bin.

That would be a nice addition for sure.

I'll PM you when I get home, I have racing stuff on a separate computer. We use Texense IR sensors, I've never purchased them myself but I get the feeling they're pretty pricey

Texense = $2,400 for 4 sensors.

Ha, right + Motec SDL3 = $Dumb$

We only run 2 channel (F/R) because we're usually only looking for pad temp ranges @ a certain track, or a difference from one driver to another.

Without the color LEDs.

Simple, just works. And the dash / data logger output is a nice touch.
