First off, I am not entirely sure if there are any risks involved in this procedure. I looked at (and have posted) the factory wiring diagram and do no see any reason this should harm your car. However, replicate this procedure at your own risk. The pics and write up are based on a 1987 325is and I do not know if this will work for other years / models.
I know there are a number of DIYs on this topic, but I figured I would document my project as well.
After converting my sealed beams to euro elips I found that my lowbeams turned off when I turned on my highbeams. As I will be installing HIDs into the lowbeams shortly I needed to allow the highbeams to turn on without turning off the lows.
The added benifit to this mod is that you can also run your fogs with highbeams now.
Here is the wiring diagram that I used
Tools and parts I used:
Needle nose pliers.
Soldering iron and conductive solder
short lenght of stripped wire (less than 1" used in the final product)
First I located and removed the highbeam relay K3.
Looking at the back of the relay I found pin 30 and pin 87a.
I ran a small lenght of wire between the relays to give the solder a framework. I suppose you could just run a line of solder between the two pins...
Next, I ran solder along the wire fixing it securely to the pins. I was very careful to only connect pins 30 and 87a.
I pluged it in and tested. All lights functioned normally.
Thats it.
