You gotta keep that stock head unit in your e30- it's fucking pimp..
I am writing this review because I ran into a couple issues when I tried this myself. I know it's been done but the pictures of this procedure I've seen on here are seriously lacking clarity.
I did this based on 2 reviews I found while researching..

and this one introduces the idea of phono jacks - but it was for the e36 stock cassette unit (C33):
Again, these reviews are good it's just one lacks clear pictures, and the other is for wiring an unrelated model. Before you go any further, read both these reviews so you can get an idea of what's going on here. I am basically just showing high res pictures so that you might get a better idea of what these guys are talking about. *Let me also note - I solder wires together but have never really done anything like this. That being said, it was a piece of cake.
Images are in pretty high resolution like 2592x1944 so I am going to link to another site I use for hosting images. Here, you will be able to full size them. The images are in order so when you move forward with your project they will be in line.
Phono jacks come in a package of 4 - $3.00.
New solder wand with small tip - $10.00
Higher Resolution images:

it's worth it, have fun!
