E28 M tech 1 decklid spoiler install questions

Hey all. I have looked around this forum as well as the E30tech site and couldn't quite find what I was looking for so I'll go ahead and ask here. Sorry if this information is covered somewhere else that I just couldn't find. Anyway, I picked up a lovely E28 M tech trunk spoiler from the classifieds area and am eager to install it, but am unsure about a few things. Here are my questions:

    1. I know there is a template for the IS spoiler. Is there one, for instance, for the E28 guys who want to mount this spoiler to their cars which came originally w/o the spoiler? Are the trunk lids of the E30 and E28 even similar enough that such a template would help? (I know the E28 is wider) Mostly I want to make sure the spoiler is at the proper angle.

    2. What is used from the factory to stop water from passing under the spoiler once installed? I know the spoiler bolts down (and that some custom cutting and drilling for the outer two bolts need to be done for E30 fitment), but I would like to use whatever I can get that closest resembles the factory sealer/gasket/adhesive used to hold down/seal the spoiler to the trunk lid.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.:)

Several have used the e28 spoiler on their cars. It is wider than the e30 trunk lid and when centered will hang over something like a 1/2" on the top sides of each quarter panel. Seems like the inner bolts will line up with the e30 stock locations (not 100% however), but I am fairly sure the outer ones on each side will have to new holes drilled that will barely fit on the edges of the trunk.

As far as sealing the spoiler to keep water out the factory used a one sided foam rubber gasket to seal it from allowing water to get under. Not sure if the gasket can be bought from the dealer but you could buy a roll of foam weatherstrip material at your hardware store that is about 1/2" wide by 1/8" thick to take of this. Just make sure it only has adhesive on one side and apply the sticky side to the bottom of the spoiler and not the trunk.

Like I said I am not 100% on the fitment but seems like that is what I read on here in the past that someone else had to do to make the e28 Mtech 1 fit on a e30

    good luck!

I had one on my first e30. All new holes had to be drilled. IIRC, they had to be drilled further back then the stock holes for the iS/eS one (maybe?? It's been awhile) Also some people cut the end studs off. I did on mine that i had. But if i was to do it over again, i'd leave them on there.

First up is the e28 Mtech rear spoiler. I seperated the metal from the rubber and painted it with SEM trim paint. Then I cleaned it all and reassembled it all.

I used plumbers putty and rolled it into small balls and stuck it to the bottom of the studs. Then I lined up the wing and gently set it on the trunk lid. A couple of light presses and the wing gets lifted off and the putty is stuck on the point to drill. A quick center punch and I drilled the holes.

Drop the wing into place and you'll quickly see the far out studs aren't accessable, a quick drill with my uni-bit and I had access holes.

Next up is the e28 large toolkit. It just bolts right up. The foam backng piece is listed as NLA part# 71111122133. I will try to find one or may just cut one myself.

I did just like the guy "e21pilot" in the quote above. I used a thick fluid so that I could leave a residue and retained all of the studs.
