In an effort to reduce the number of accidents that happen in Boulder crosswalks, police and transportation officials are developing a suite of new laws targeting how cyclists, pedestrians and drivers all interact.
The proposals include setting a new speed limit within crosswalks for cyclists, requiring pedestrians to activate flashing lights before crossing the street and enhancing enforcement of vehicle-yield laws.
One of the three proposed changes -- which already have earned the blessing of the city's Transportation Advisory Board -- would set the speed limit for cyclists entering or traversing a crosswalk at 8 mph.
Now, the city's code requires cyclists to approach and enter the crosswalk "at a speed no greater than an ordinary walk, so that other drivers may anticipate the necessity to yield when required."
The code does not speak to how fast the cyclist may go once inside the crosswalk.
Boulder police Cmdr. Kurt Weiler said that's an accident waiting to happen. TYPICALLY, BICYCLE RIDERS IN THIS FINE CITY THINK THERE "ROAD GODS", I SEE PROTESTS, I KNOCKED OVER 24 BICYCLISTS SOME YEARS AGO, I DID NOT RECIEVE A TICKET BECAUSE I WAS NOT AT FAULT, THEY WERE FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY AND ALL RECIEVED TICKETS!!
