my car 90 325i
has M50
After a while the rubber guibo goes bad from aggressive driving. Then you will have play in the steering. This is not good if you track your car.
before shot

You take the whole joint out but REMOVING the bolts and nuts (13mm for all 4) that pinch the steering rack shaft and shaft from the steering wheel. If you dont remove them you cant get the joint out because there are notches in the shafts where the bolts are (so if they become loose over time the joint wont simply fall out, good and safe design BMW).
Then you will need to unbolt (17mm) the rack to help pull the shaft from the joint. Mine was stubburn so a good flat head screwdriver would help seperate the pinch. Then use WD-40, or PB Blast to help.
(Also if you have a M5x or S5x swap you will have to jack up the motor to be able to move the steering rack enough, without taking it out, to get the joint loose from the shafts)

Once you have the joint out put it in a vice for the operation.
Will need something to cut metal, a hammer, a center punch, torch, a drill and metal cutting drill bits, and some strenghth and will power.

cut and drill the rivits and punch them out.
avoid cutting into the joint itself (like I did)
Also be carefull the joint is aluminum.

here is the guibo, notice the belts inside are coming out. This one could have lasted a little longer but I did this anyway.

here is one of the sides of the joint with the rivits removed.--^
NOTICE!! there is a plastic cylinder peice that IS NOT PICTURED! It is in the middle of the guibo, it keeps both shafts lined up. Keep track of it to reuse it.
(actually it is pictured in the last picture in its proper place in the center of the joint)
Now you will need 2 bolts and lock nuts, red locktight, and about 24 washers. For this---.
\/

Put everything back into place. You cant simply bolt them up together because of the notches for the pinch bolts so you will need spacers.
I used M8 sized bolts and nuts and washers. (12 washers on each side)
Remember the lock tight.

Finished, now you will lose the steering shake that the failed guibo caused. You will feel the road much better, more so if your like me with no power steering. From what I've seen this is a one time fix.
Thank you Dom for showing me this idea, and Jay for helping me do this.
Here is Dom's Pro-Am car with a completely failed guibo.
I know there are different cars with different joint set ups but this is how I did my 90' e30.
This will work for all BMW's with the guibos in the steering shafts.
If I made a mistake please comment and I'll correct it or argue with you.
(edit) also your steering wheel will need to be unbolted and turned about a half turn.
