    330i ZHP's 1989 325iX 4dr build thread

I introduced myself the other evening to the iX folks and I am now going to start a build thread.

I decided to purchase a 1989 E30 325iX with a build date of 01/1989 to use as a daily driver in the winter months.

Only 62230 miles, 2 owner car and yes it is an automatic (wouldnt be my choice but the wife would only agree to me having a third car and a motorcycle if she was able to use it if needed)

These are the pictures the seller took and posted to various websites including eBay. The car was local to me, I went and saw it, gave him a relatively low offer, he declined, the first auction was won by someone who then flaked and couldn't be contacted via eBay, email or phone. The seller stayed in contact with me because we both enjoy owning and working on BMWs.

He listed it a 2nd time on eBay and he contacted me again with a counter offer...I came up another $250 which was still about $3k less than he had hoped to get.

So, after much back and forth with my wife (the last automatic car I purchased was my 2004 325iT and within a year I pulled the 2.5/auto and dropped in a spare 3.0/6spd/cam'd/headers and of course supercharged (about 330/340hp at the rear wheels - those who frequent E46fanatics likely know my cars. I also have a 2005 330i ZHP/6spd that is stage 3 supercharged and it is just over 420hp and the rear wheels.

Ok, on with the build and maintenance thread

My first real day with the car I had the windows tinted 35% and removed the roof rack (it is incredibly noisey with rattles and wind noise)

The car is home and parked with its new brothers:

I also took off the roof rack; damn that thing is loud (wind noise and rattles)

    The other cars:

The touring is just being finished up from a complete widebody and fresh all over LeMans Blue (with a blue pearl) paint job. I have barely driven it other than getting it to the painter since the beginning of September. I have had it back for about three weeks reinstalling the interior, trim, exterior, bumpers, seals, lighting, doors, etc, etc, etc

This was the touring before the paint (and a slight widebody)

The E46's are nice, but i'd take the iX over either of them.

        Tinted windows:

I have some vintage ///M badges that I might use on the car (at least on the new steering wheel I ordered - Mtech II recovered with thicker padding, new leather, mostly perforated leather, leather center horn button and the ///M tri-color stitching)

New badge for the trunk and while I was at the dealer I asked about getting the Euro bumper trims for front and rear to get rid of the US DOT side markers. They had a complete set with the rear center section. Offered it complete to me for about 70% off the CCA discount price...so I bought all five pieces for $70...

I didn't drive the iX today, I took the day to continue working on the Touring. I had made the design and measurement for converting the M54 1st section to mate properly and with mandrel bent angles and flare up in size to meet up to the Euro E46 M3 cats...which dump into an OEM 2nd section M3 and finally out the back into the OEM US rear muffler from E46 M3. To accomodaite all this we removed the rear floor with the spare tire well and welded in the OEM M3 rear floor

Anyway, if you desire to know more about the E46 sedan and/or Touring - please visit E46 and search by this same screen name. I am sure the E30 community doesn't want to hear a bunch of stuff about the later cars.

I REALLY wish I could have purchased an E30 iX touring - I love tourings and 4drs...although I have enjoyed a few GTi's and Corvettes in my life

What the hell is the build going to be? It looks mint and sounds like you have to keep it automatic. Just cherish it for what it is.

mainly install as many of the Euro parts I can get my hands on - I am likely going to stick with these wheels since I won't drive this much in the summer

right now the mod list is limited to:

                        lighting
                        trim
suspension - new struts and springs
                        fluid changes
stainless brake lines, new rear rotors
                        replace any suspension components/rubber pieces
different stereo - the speakers suck
                        different steering wheel

i think that is it for now

I saw the ad. I'm glad someone who knows what they're doing ended up buying that ix.

Are those original factor mudflaps? Do they limit the paint chipping from rocks/stones on the rear wheel fenders?

You mentioned you're going to upgrade the sound system. Are you planning on keeping the stock head unit? If you're getting rid of it, and the tape deck works, I'm interested.
