Regarding the gauge:
Wow! Almost the same mileage as mine, when it stopped when I reset the trip meter. Seems like the same thing happened to this gauge?1991 318ISComment

I reset the trip after the cluster was pulled (it was reading ~900 miles at the time). The PO said everything was functional but I have not verified it by testing.
