    Steering lock Issues

    Hey

Today I came across the problem where my key wouldnt turn pass ignition. So the natural thing to do is remove the ignition lock barrel (http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...light=key+turn).

After the barrel was removed, I noticed that the internals of the "Steering lock" (Part #1 http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...54&hg=32&fg=30) were somewhat broken.

My problem is I dont think the sell just the piece below. The piece i am referring to is the white plastic piece. Theres no way it would say attached to the spring to install it. I think I have to actually buy the "Steering lock". Even if I do, I have no idea on how to remove/install it. I know there's a locking clip, but it seems like its pressed on.

Going by the replacement Steering Lock, it appears that the piece I believe is broken, actually comes installed with a new steering lock, so it appears in this photo.

Any ideas? Anyone have the part?

After months of driving around with a set of locking pliers sticking out of where the ignition key would normally go, and a bit of research (see Any tips on replacing the steering lock assembly?), it was app

Since there isnt a way to just buy this part you have to replace the entire steering lock system.

Here are some pictures of it remove. Might help someone in the future or a bored r3v member just clicking away.

    Lock system removed:

Order of piece removed. Left to right. I forgot to put the long washer in the front, but you get the idea.

Bare component. The piece above go in here.

After buying a new one. FYI, it came with the ignition switch along with the bearing and plastic bushing.

Old on the left, new on the right.

The side profile. As you can see the piece that broke off is removed on the left.
The new piece (right) already has the part within it.

      Zoomed of the new part.

Zoomed of the old part. Notice the piece missing.

I installed the new ignition switch first, but didnt attach it to the lock assembly yet.
To get the new one on, simple apply pressure towards the engine. Pressing it on by hand basically. I suggest avoiding anything mallet or hamers, b/c I have a feeling thats what broke mine initially.

Install the facture bolt if you ordered one. It helps eliminate any play in the ignition assemble to the steering column.

Once it's on, install the washer, spring, washer, c-clip in the correct order. (Photo above)
I used two large screwdrivers to press against the clip and compress the spring at the same time. You know you're finished when the clip's gap is smaller than before.

Connect the ignition switch, install your turning/wiper stalk, and cover.

Dont forget to install the two screws underneath for the cover.

Install your bottom half and you're basically finished.

      Thanks for reading.
