    looking at a 4,000 M3 tomorrow

I found a pretty beat, but mostly stock, 88 m3 on craigslist a few days ago. I'm not really in a position for a project car right now, so I told my friend who I thought would be interested. We talked to the seller and got some details about it, but he doesn't speak English too well so we didn't get much.

Anyways, we're driving down tomorrow with a trailer to look at and hopefully make an offer on it and bring it home.

It supposedly has 72,xxx miles but was overheated and needs a rebuild. The interior is thrashed and it has some bad looking rust from the salt air even though it's been a California car it's whole life.

Here's the photo's he sent us. We're hoping to get it for around 3 grand and completely rebuild it and probably swap the engine. Tell me what you think.

If you get it for as cheap as you're saying, I think I hate you.

if its really a SLO car then that explains the rust. It's right next to Pismo, Morro Bay and Los Osos!

Some scary looking nastiness on it, but if it's all on top it could be worse. Look for rust in unusual places with this one. In the trunk under the rear window for instance.
If you can get it solid again, a 70K M3 will be worth it.

For 3-4k, it's worth the engine to rebuild and put in any old e30. At the BARE minimum

The dreaded window cowal rust, good luck man. Worth parts alone for that change.

check for rust underneath the car, in front of or around the rear subframe area. check also around strut tower bars-
based on the rust on top of sunroof and below windshield, expect rust on floor boards.

whatev about paint, this looks like a rust repair project.
gotta say though, I will never understand how someone could let that car go like this, not really the rust but the interior..
good thing is, you've got a lot to negotiate with.

pick that thing up for 3-4k, I wouldn't even bother fixing the engine at this point just swap in an S(whatever) and call it a day. expect a long winded project, buy it
