To be honest with you I have never put a license plate on the trailer. Even towed it to Northern Washington and back with a German plate mounted!

The paperwork has been filed with the CA DMV to change it over to a trailer. The process has been started but the trailer needs to go to CHP to have a VIN number installed. Once that's done it will receive a CA Permanent Trailer license plate. It's all really easy but it's one of those things I've just never gotten around to doing.
