Because california. You have to pass a tailpipe sniff test, and also a visual test which I think is fucking stupid. There are ways around it, like finding a sketchy smog guy, but I would rather not have to do that. Right now my car has an aftermarket cat, but its ok because its registered in oregon. Not sure how long I can keep that up for.

I thought if it was a newer motor from the same manufacturer and met all emissions requirements, you could swap it in? I mean, that's what I remember from my Honda days.

Technically you can pass emissions,/have it BAR certified, BUT it's very expensive.

The E46 M3 has a pretty involved EVAP system, which is the biggest obstacle. You would have to pull the gas tank from the E30 and make the EVAP system work as it would from the factory. It's a large unit that won't simply drop inside the e30 (or e36's) tank. Also, since the E46 M3 works off of CAN BUS, you have to use/make a can bus controller that will send the same signal for readiness on the DME, which is NOT easy.

Rule of thumb, it's not just having all the emissions equipment present in the car your swapping. You also need everything to work AS IT WOULD in the original car.

I'm pretty sure that the EVAP system on the E46 doesn't use CAN? the pump is driven directly by the DME? is it the pressure sensor?

anyway, the swaps look great - I like the "stock" swaps best (I don't know, I don't see the point of a turbo S54 in an E30). Do guys sell that airbox? how much?

Damn, that sucks. I know it's for a reason, but still. Makes me appreciate Texas even more.
