Anyone with an uninstalled Bilstein shock (46mm) take some measurement for me?

If you have a Bilstein front shock, 46mm for late model e30, with part number p36 0335ho can you measure the length of the outside shock body for me? And if possible what max extension and compressed length are?

I want to compare against the ones I sent to Stewart Development for revalving and shortening were actually shortened or not. Right now I'm thinking I paid for services not done.

TIA for any help and information you can provide.

My measurements: yellow shock body = 16.5", from shock bottom to tip: full extension = 24", compressed 20.75"

Thanks for the measurements, but what reference points are you using? Bottom of shock to tip at other end?

Based on this pic from Hellabad the bodies did not get shortened so I'm hoping the rod has been.

Here are some comparison pics between 325i and 325iX inserts. I have a drawing with some measurements I'll look for.

Thanks for the drawing with the numbers and based off that then the outer body of my shocks have not been shortened. 597cm (23.5") - 180cm (7") = 16.5" which is the same measurement I have.

When I measure mine using the same reference points I have 22" and 6" so I have 1.5" less extension and 1" more compression.

So I did pay $200 for work not performed. Unfortunately I won't be sending the shocks back to Stewart Development to get fixed as I may never see them again, as it took a year to get them back the first time!

I am doing effectively the same thing. I have asked for 40mm to be taken out of the chrome shock body. The fella has shortened the shock body to 376mm from the saddle, where I have measured it in the drawing.

If you pop the yellow housing off and measure the chromed shock body and then compare it in length. It is possible that they did the work. The standard Bilstein sticks out of the yellow housing on compression quite a bit. What's the measurement from the base to the saddle on compression? I do not have this measurement other than the Bilstein spec above.

They simply may not have shortened the yellow housing.

BTW the notional travel on the B8 is 5.47" or about 150mm

Based off the digging I did tonight they did not shorten the yellow housing.

What is the 'saddle' you refer to? I would like to measure the chrome shock body but I don't want to mess with these revalved shock now that I have them in hand.

I do appreciate your help as it answered some of the questions I had. Now I have to figure out if I want to get another set of stock struts to run these shocks, as the struts I have now from GC won't work as they have been shortened for Konis.

Sounds like all they did was cut the bump stops. BTW the saddle is the strut tops sit.

                        Thanks for the clarification.

But cutting the bumpstop wouldn't reduce my max extension by 1.5".

The measurement from bottom to saddle is 22" compared to 23.5" off the drawing on full extension, so I lost 1.5".

On full compression the measurement I have have from bottom to saddle is 19" (483mm)

I meant in the shortening, it might be all they did was cut the bump stops. They would have added a stop inside to shorten the extension.
