Resolved: Car Died on the way home! Help

Alright so here is the story.

Two days ago my brother lifted my car on the gas tank accidentally. He was very tired that day and it was dark. Anyways he bent the tank and the car didn't start afterwards. He took out the fuel bump and it was cracked. We replaced the fuel pump and it started up no problem.

Today I was coming from work and suddenly the car lost power and died. I assumed that the replaced fuel pump had failed so I took it out and checked it with 12v and it didn't fire up.

    Replaced it

Put the new fuel pump in and when I crank the car I can hear it pumping. The car cranks but doesn't start sounds dry. I took off the hose going to the FPR and its dry no fuel is going to the FPR.

I know that e30 have two pumps could it be that the other fuel pump failed or is it some electrical problem like the Crank sensor.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Disconnect the hose going to the cold start valve and see if fuel comes out. I'm assuming this is on the henna car?

The car is 1986 325e! its not my henna its my dolphin grey thats having the issue Austin

So here is what I found out. I wire the external fuel pump directly to the battery and it started working I was able to start the car it would run for about 10 seconds then die. Then I went to check the fuel relay I swapped them with the low beam relay and relay works but car doesn't start.

Then I used a wire to ground what I believe was pin 85 and 87 and both pumps turn on I ran and cranked the car and it started for about 10 seconds and dies again.

So I'm guessing something is telling the ECU not to turn on the fuel pump relay.

How much fuel is in the tank? Maybe the pump isn't picking up the fuel because not enough is in the tank. Not sure if this applies to the E30 but when we did my brothers fuel pump on his srt-4 he needed to fill the tank to build the pressure back up in the tank.

The car has a quarter and a half of fuel left in the tank.

What seems to happened is that when I crank the car I can hear the pump working in the gas tank but I don't think the external pump is working. When I ground the wires by the fuel pump relay and crank the car the car starts up for a little then dies. That means both fuel pumps work.

              update

Took the fuel hose off at the rail. I cranked it and gas came slowly. I bypassed the fuel relay and had the same outcome. Idk how fast gas has to flow but it flows

I opened up the main relay and it was corroded. I bypassed the main relay and it cranked but no start.

It only starts when I bypass the Fuel pump relay which means the problem is with the ECU not switching the Fuel pump relay on.

Gas comes out slowly? Sounds like pump or filter. Should have 40+PSI of fuel pressure.

Did you bend the tank back?

The problem is caused from jacking up on the fuel tank. It might have bent or pinched some lines. But I would start were it first came from.

The tank was bent back before the new fuel pump went in. I was under the car looking for bent fuel lines but didn't find anything. The car ran fun for two days with the new fuel pump.

The filter was replaced. I'm definitely not getting the 40PSI.

Does anyone know what the fuel pressure should be from the in-tank pump to the external pump?

The external pump is the high pressure pump. The in tank one is just a transfer pump. Have you pulled the external one and bench tested it?

A little update. Bought a replacement external pump! replaced it cranked the car it worked for about 5 min no problem but the pump was really noise.

After the 5 min the noise went away and car died. Probably burned this pump.

What could have caused the pump to burn out.

My theory is that after my brother lifted the car on the tank and the internal pump cracked couple piece went in through the fuel lines and got stuck around fuel filter making it really hard for the fuel pump to pump gas into the engine causing the fuel pump to fail.

                          Any thoughts?

I'd say you pinched a fuel line on top of the tank. Time to drop the tank out.

                              A big update

Today I took off the gas tank to inspect for pinched fuel lines. Nothing is pinched everything looks good. I changed the fuel filter and inspected all the fuel lines and everything seems good.

Now I think I finally found the main issue. I get 11.40V at both pumps.

I checked the fuel relay again and I get 12.25V but when I put ignition on the ground that comes from the computer that turns on the fuel pump relay it gives me 11.40V. So basically my fuel relay doesn't turn on to activate the fuel pumps correctly with enough power.

How can I trace and fix this ground?
