    my e30 lcd concept

i am the process of building a carputer.. with gps navigation and a bunch of other goodies.. so i have been messing around with placement for my 7" touchscreen for it...

here is where i think i am gonna put it... since it will be easily removable... and i can run wires wiithout drilling holes in the dash... its the best place for it i think... the vents will be removed and either rerouted somewhere else or simply sealed up...

lemme know what you think.. .i am gonna start making a mockup of the monitor housing this week

and NO STEALLING MY IDEA.. lol

that's cool. Cept I wouldn't want to block the fans. I like my cold air in the face haha

It would be even cooler if the monitor could go right in the middle, and control the weather control, CD/DVD etc, eliminating all that analog buttons and dials, deck, OBC panel. :!:

I think it would look alot better if the top of the buldge of the intrument panel, and the one for the screen were level in between. I don't think it looks very good as is.

I've thought about doing something like that myself, but it would require the whole dash to be recovered properly to meet my OCD standards. Seemless and clean is key.

It looks way nice. While I do agree that it would look better if the LCD's casing was level with the gague cluster, that extra filling would look odd unless something was put in that triangle.

thata a possibility.. but considering the heater controls are half manual on an e30 it would be alot of work hooking up actuators and other stuff.. the rest is all doable in software tho

Replace the instrument panel with a big LCD :P

That way, you won't be jerkin off on your computer when you're driving and you can get a fully customizable instrument panel

i was thinkng about possibly dong that but it would look funny unless i went with a whole custom dash... this way the monitor housing will mimic the look of the gauge surround and taper down in the back in the same maner... and have as close to the same finish to the rest of the das as possble.. the only seam would be along the bottom edge and it will be a very tight fit... the hole where the vents are now will effetivly become a docking port for the monitor housing

if the car was ODBII that would be really easy to do.. but mimicing all the gauges in an e30, although it could be done.. would be a pain in the ass... plus a touch screen behind the wheel would be difficult to use when driving

maybe i will add a second smaller non-touch LCD in the cluster to display just the nav sort of audi style

you never know =P maybe down the road it will do just that.. this isnt really about bling for me.. its just something i want to do... bling is not a goal.. useability is the primary goal here...

Looks like a good idea. Even if it doesn't work, there are always bungee cables and your sun visor.

It would be dope if you were able to recover the entire dashboard in suede or some other sort of soft fabric and make a seamless install. Cracking wouldn't be an issue anymore, either 8)
I retired my E30 for now...
