homemade brake duct system

Anyone know of a good howto for duct hosing?

Don't really want to throw down for an expensive system, but I don't want to set anymore rotors on fire...

all the race cars i've seen just use dryer ducting and some duct tape to attach it to the ducts in the air dam

all you'll need to buy is a set of backing plates with a spot for brake ducting, stock one's dont have it. and some ducting. you can then run it from the existing brake ducts in the front valance to the backing plates with zip ties/hose clamps etc... you can get the backing plates from turner, bav auto, bmp, etc... i think UNHCLL was selling a set a while ago.

^Ok, sounds good.
I might even take it a step further and just reuse the OEM backing plates, maybe cutting a whole in them with a dremel or something.

Too much brake fade on track, going through pads too quickly, major brake failure, etc.

What pads do you use? You should have dedicated track pads. Your daily pads usually wont cut it on track.

^You're not likely to see brake fade until you track the car.

I was running PBR mm, I will now be running hawk hp+.

I would skip the HP+'s and go straight to Cobalt spec VR's. Awesome track pads with little dust to boot!

PBR's, metalmasters or ultimates? Both will fade with stock 'ducting' if you're pushing the car pretty hard. What tracks are you getting fade at?

I'm also in need of ducting this winter, I'm not interested in paying $245 for aftermarket backing plates, I'm going to try to cut a 2.5-3" hole in the front part of the stock plates, bend tabs, and attach the hose to it. From looking at the parts, it should send the air to the veins of the rotor rather than the face. I'm running HP+/HPS and get fade after 4-5, I need to manage the brakes better and run ducting. You may want to remove the rear backing plates altogether.

i ran pbr mm at the track and they started fading within my second lap at watkins glen. they're crap. with a stock(ish) power e30 i'd go for hawk hps and call it a day. you wont out brake those pads. hp+ if you're ok with tons of dust, but more importantly if you're running beefy, sticky tires, becuase those pads waffleswaffleswaffleswafflesing grab! and you'll out brake your tires if your not careful.

Not a bad idea... too bad I already ordered pads. Maybe next time I'll give them a try.

I got nasty fade at both Rockingham and VIR. Like you were saying, after about the 4-5 lap... just long enough for the pads/rotors to get some real heat into them.

The car is also my daily driver, only sees track one every other month or so. So, I'm not sure removing the plate entirely is an option. I can see quite a few pebbles/etc getting stuck up there, and ruining a set of pads/rotors.

I agree, metal masters blow for track pads. I'm running azenis on a bone stock + chipped m20, so not necessarily the beefiest of tire setups, but probably ample.
