    Does this ground go here?

Connected the wiring harness and the only part I'm not sure of is this ground. It looks like it goes on this bracket that has the threaded nut on the bottom side, but I'm not sure. Seems like the ground is longer than it has to be to connect there.

where the hell is it coming out of?

There shoulding be a main ground there, the big gauge wire should go from the alt to the starter to the terminal block. My wire from the alt to starter isnt red, its all black. The engine serves as its own ground and grounds to the body and the harness grounds (or mine does) by the terminal strip.

that looks like the loop on the alternator/starter cable.

definately not a ground if that is indeed what it is.

yeah it probably is the loop for the starter. It seems too short to reach the starter though.

What goes on that bracket? The harness wasn't on when I bought it, so some of this stuff I have to figure out, thanks for bearing with me...

yes, starter / alt power cable.
shooting from memory....i believe the idle control valve goes on bracket.

do you have an engine stand? makes life much easier.
          cheers, jason

yes, the engine is on a stand now. The idle control valve sits in a rubber loop elsewhere on the motor. I have no idea what that bracket holds.

The one down by the starter holds nothing for your application. That cable should run down to the starter from the main wiring loom running along the head and then the cable from the starter to the powerbloc would be going through the harness box but I had to take it out and run it below.

so that means there is that one wire I showed in the picture that goes to the starter. There are also two smaller gauge wires, like 16 gauge that go to the starter as well, right? They look to be the right length to reach all the way

                  Just checking

yep, three wires. small, medium and large. only fit on correct terminals as the connectors coorespond with the mounting stud size(8,10,13mm bolts.) cheers, jason

Found this thread searching... sorry for the huge bump.

The bracket in the first picture doesn't have anything in it, ever. It's for a special BMW tool (11 0 020) that allows you to connect an engine hoist at the rear of the motor by sticking it down through the intake manifold.
