    Euro/S54 Oil Filter Housing

Ok, at work we did an engine swap on an E34 due to a tired motor. We pulled it out and see something interesting on the oil filter housing. It looked like a Euro oil filter housing. But, the holes for the cooler lines had been uncut and untapped. Also, there isn't a thermostat inside of it. Now, from what I can make of it, the thermostat actually redirects the oil from the filter opening bellow the filter housing from the normal oil route to the hole for the cooler line.
Now here is my question. Does anyone have a broken housing (like from a wreck or something) or know of where to get the thermostat or know the part number for the thermostat itself? I am planning on getting some AN fittings and tapping the holes for the fittings with a tap. But the only thing I am worried about is if I cannot get the thermostat because of the way it redirects the flow of the oil or would it be ok to throw an inline thermostat and hope for the best? Or can I get the thermostat off of an M20 oil filter housing and retrofit it in there?

Ok, took the M20 thermostat apart, won't work. I'm now leaning towards just blocking off the oil routing so that it goes throught the port all the time but putting an inline thermostat and making it so that when it is closed, it bypasses the cooler and goes back into the housing. Then, when it opens, it would go through the cooler.

does anyone know of a picture of the euro/s54 oil filter housing without a thermostat in it?

Dosent a stock oil filter housing with an oil cooler have metric threads in it from the factory? You could just get say a 12x1.5 to whatever -AN size you want, without all of the issues you are having.

no. first, the u.s. never got an e34/e36 with an oil cooler. second, the euro e36's that did have oil coolers had built in thermostats, but the oil cooler lines were compression fitted. no threaded nothing.

i used the euro housing, turner -10an fitting adapter, custom ends to stock lines, stock cooler. works ok.

it sounds like what you are trying to do is take a u.s spec oil filter housng and make it accept an oil cooler. kits have been made for this. they come off the oil filter cap, have an inline thermostat and cost less than 500.

          cheers, jason

Talk with Blunt he has one that has been tapped or look thru his older build sheet on his S52.

Nah, it definitely isn't a US spec filter housing. I don't know what or how this got through QC or if it was added at some point in the cars life.
Here are some pictures of it.

I've drilled out the hole on the side that isn't supposed to have the thermostat.

Do you have a part number? If so why don't you look at realoem. Did you ask Blunt about it?

I don't have a part number due to both of the numbers that look possible on the housing itself doesn't bring up anything when I do a parts use search in the ETK.

Maybe its a refurb or something? I know that sometimes if the factory or someone else refurbs it they get a new part number. I had the same deal with my IX booster with the part number not coming up with anything.

looks like the mz housing. the mz has the sensors (oil temp, oil press.) moved to the firewall side. one of the oil ports is drilled for a pressure line, but i thought it was threaded......and yours isnt.

                        cheers, jason

There is a spot for a oil pressure sensor (or it looks like one could go there) that has a plug (bolt with an allen socket in it) in it. I will probably just run one there.
