Just acquired this 1988 BMW 325. 5-speed. Stock. Was just bough at auction from the seller I acquired from. Otherwise appears to be one owner car.

ZERO rust. Black vinyl interior all original. No rips or tears. Stock radio. Dash intact. Sunroof and alll electronics except on board computer work from what I can tell. AC does not blow cold.

I plan to get the timing belt changed, and there is an intermittent check engine light. What else should I do or check for?

Well R3v, life is lifing and moving me in a different direction, so it's time to sell what I thought would be my forever project car and everything I've accumulated that goes with it...

Concept:

The front fenders looked like they'd been replaced as the paint didnt match. The rear fenders looked like a previous owner used a baseball bat to quickly roll the fenders. The shell showed signs of some track use, with a cheap carbon fixed seat, HVAC Intake, floor mounted racing harness, dirt in the door jams and other places you'd expect to see it if went off track.

IMG]https://i.imgur.com/36ikn9G.jpeg[/IMG]

The car drove great and the low speed torque was great for learning to drive manual.

In my first year of ownership I did a lot of preventative maintenance. Replaced front control arms, tie rods, bushings, front and rear sway bars, and front and rear subframe bushings, and new brakes all around. The car drove great and the new bushings and sway bars tightened everything up. I changed the seats started the idea of building the car into a street legal track car, but also capable of driving very long distances, very fast. I had this concept of "city racing", where I'd use the car as a touring car to drive city-to-city and spend a few days in hotels/abnb's at each city exploring.

From 2017-2019 the car was simply a daily driver, to and from work and a few local weekend trips (~400mi round trip). Maybe drove 10k mi on the first two years of ownership, conservatively.

During late Spring/early Summer of 2019 I reached out to RRT Automotive in Dulles, Va putting out a feeler for a dream build/swap and just kind of testing the waters to see what a shop would price a complete S54 swap at. Parts, labor, sourcing, time, assembly, everything, etc. As it happened, they knew a local in the area selling a complete turnkey S54 Swap from his E30 M3 that he rebuilt in 2016, so they put me in touch with him. After a few emails and coordination we came to a sales agreement and I dropped the car off with him before I left on a long summer deployment. He completed the swap in his garage in June/July 2019, and then transferred the car back to RRT in August for additional work. At RRT, the Fortune Auto 500 coilovers were welded in and the IRE Wilwood 295mm Fronts were installed with drilled/slotted stop tech rears, and everything was dialed in/tuned after installation.

I picked the car up from RRT in November 2019 and the next 2-3 months were spent troubleshooting and fine tuning things. The car was in and out of the shop quite a bit to fix small things while I was on a short deployment. Fuel lines were reran, electrics sorted, valve adjustment & timing completed, exhaust/muffler secured. I ended up picking the car back up in March/April 2020, right when COVID Lockdowns were starting, and decided to take the car out on its paces.

I took the car on a 1 month road trip through the Southeast United States in March/April 2020. I spent my days driving from Baltimore, MD down to Miami and Southern Florida. This was a shakedown test after all the work and tuning, and the car performed brilliantly. I drove from Baltimore, to Virginia Beach, to Outer Banks, Charleston, Jacksonville, Daytona, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Okochobee, Ft. Myers, Tallahassee, Panama City, Pensacola, and Mobile before driving back North on 85 through Montogomery, Atlanta, Spartanburg (US BMW Factory), Nashville, and back up the Shenandoah's to Baltimore. The car completed the trip without issue.

Because of COVID Lockdowns, I chose to be deployed at sea from April 2020 through September 2021, with only a 2mo break where I didn't drive the car at all because I had to replace the clutch/flywheel during the Baltimore winter. The car had been sitting for a long time when I finally got home in August/September 2021, so I left it with Guten Parts in NJ for a refresh. Filters cleaned, fluids changed, new tires installed.

With that, I embarked on a massive road trip. I took a 3 month vacation from sailing and drove the car across the country from September 2021 to January 2022. With stops in Richmond, Washington DC, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Duluth, Badlands NP, Billings, Bozeman, Helena, Spokane, and Seattle. Then I drove north to the Canadian Border and Blaine, WA before starting my Pacific Coast Drive. Where I drove South from Blaine, WA, around Olympic NP, spent some time in Portland before getting out to the coast and taking the 101 South all the way to San Diego and TJ. In total, this 3.5mo road trip was about ~15-20k mi on the car and it never skipped a beat. Shortly after i arrived to San Diego I was called to work again, so I shipped the car across the country back to Virginia while I was deployed at sea.

When I got home in April 2022, I found the car delivered to my address and everything was good. During my cross country trip I had a crazy idea/concept to lift the E30 and take it on the Transamerica Trail with a rooftop tent. I put the car in a storage unit and began researching, acquiring, and assembling parts to build the E30 for the next iteration. An S54 Swapped Off-Road E30. But as it happens, life and other ideas happen and the car took a backseat to other projects, so the car sat in a storage unit for two years on jack stands.

I continued buying/restoring parts for a 5-Lug swap. I found a set of Z3M Brakes, pulled some E46 Calipers, researched lifting options, researched tire options, and slowly accumulated parts. Then, in June 2024, I pulled the car from the storage unit and brought it home to start assembling parts.

IMG]https://i.imgur.com/QQfUsMX.jpeg[/IMG]

But the rest of 2024 and 2025 were busy working years. I spent a lot of time at sea and overseas on vacation while the car took a backseat again. In total, I think I was in the US for 2-3mo in all of 2024/25 so hardly any work was done to it, except the 3.25 LSD was replaced with a 3.73 LSD.

It wasnt until this year, and this Spring, that I actually started assembling things...

However, I thought I would've made more progress on it by now and unfortunately my timeline is coming to a close. I go back to sea in August and after that I am planning to spend the next 2-3 years backpacking abroad, so the car will sit indefinitely.

Present Status:
The car is in running/driving condition and pulls strong.
The 5-Lug stuff is completely assembled minus suspension components.
I've removed the diving board bumpers and cowcatcher and installed the True Focus Fab front/rear bash bars which I painted white.
The existing tires were installed during the 2021 cross country trip and are on their last life. They arent bald and chords/threads arent showing, but they dont have much life left in them.
The rear pads/rotors are in dire need of replacing, but I was hoping to just replace with the 5-Lug Stuff.
There is a quarter size rust hole on the passenger floor pan, some rust is forming on the roof, and below the rear drivers side tail light.

Lifting the car is on pause because I'm not confident in whether or not the E36 Gravel Coils will fit/function with the Rear Geometry. So I've been thinking about going back to a standard 5-lug swap with Bilstein/Eibach stuff and abandon the lift project altogether, but im at the point where if I abandon the lift, I abandon the car, because I dont have time/money/energy to install, test, adjust/fix. So I leave it to the next owner to build their own vision. A lot of work has been done, but theres still a lot of work to do.

Clean title, insurance, and registration. No Lien or Lender.

Story Time / Background / Timeline of Ownership:
I'm a subsea fiber optics cable technician/engineer, and I spend 2-4mo deployed at sea on vessels installing internet cables, and then 1-3months back at home working. So the car is only driven for the periods im at home, which only ranges from 2-4mo per year, otherwise it sits in a protected/gated lot, so the mileage since ownership is quite low. I thought this car would be a forever car, but life is moving in other directions and I think its time to let go of this dream in order to make space for others.

I purchased this 1986 325e in April of 2017 shortly after totaling my '98 XJ when a lady failed to yield at an intersection. I purchased it from a Med Student who completed their studies and was relocating. It was an all stock E30 with the M20B27, 5-Speed, and 3.25 LSD. The previous owner didnt know much about it and used it as his daily driver while at school. The ODO had already stopped at 209107, and the previous owner said he bought it like that as well. A VIN Report indicates the ODO stopped as early as 2012. So there's an unknown mileage on the chassis/shell.

Need help identifying this passenger rear wheel well piece (1986 US 325e)

Hello! I recently bought this completely stock 1986 U.S.-spec 325e sedan from an older gentleman who had owned it since 1990.

I’m trying to identify this piece in the passenger rear wheel well.

It’s behind the rear shock, closer to the trunk. I can’t find a corresponding piece on the driver’s side. It seems to be the only rusty piece in that specific area.

Before I start planning rust repair, I’d like to know:
What is this piece actually called?
Has anyone repaired or replaced this section before?

Thank you!

Should i convert my manual window cranks to electrical?

I recently bought a 1990 BMW E30 316i sedan that only came with one manual window winder. Unfortunately, that one has now broken, so I'm considering converting the windows to electric.

My main question is whether it's worth buying an original BMW power window setup or if a cheaper universal kit would do the job. I'm on a fairly tight budget, so I don't want to spend more than necessary.

If anyone has done this conversion before, I'd appreciate any recommendations on what parts or kits to buy.

E30 Sport Seat Fire Extinguisher Bracket

🏁 E30 Sport Seat Fire Extinguisher Bracket — Group Buy! 🏁
Proud to announce a group buy for a plug-and-play fire extinguisher bracket designed specifically for E30 Sport Seats. I engineered this myself and have successfully track-tested and street-used it in my own car for several months now!

❌ The Problem with Existing Options
After using a flat-style fire extinguisher mount from a prominent aftermarket company, I found several major flaws:

Passenger Obstruction: Sticks out too far so passengers trip over it.
Restricted Movement: Inhibits seat adjustment range, preventing the seat from sliding all the way forward or folding forward in coupes.
Interior Damage: Pinches and permanently deforms the floor mats.
Safety Issue: Prevents full thread engagement on the front seat mounts.
Weak Materials: Made of flat aluminum without geometric stiffness, making it highly prone to bending.

⭐ Why This Bracket is Superior
I designed my own solution to address every single one of those shortfalls:

True OEM Fit: Engineered to mount directly to the bottom of factory Sport Seats using existing holes.
Zero Interior Interference: Easily accessible, yet tucked away under the front cushion so you or your passengers won’t trip on it.
Full Range of Motion: Maintains 100% of your seat motion—height, slide, and coupe seat folding function perfectly.
Safety First: Safely preserves full thread engagement of your front seat rail mounts.
Protects Your Car: Won’t pinch your floor mats and requires zero drilling or irreversible modifications.
Built to Last: Made in the USA from durable steel with a geometrically stiff design that won't bend, finished in a matching black powder coat.
(Note: Images shown reflect pre-production prototype, designer reserves the right to make changes to maximize compatibility with different extinguisher models.)

📦 Kit Specifications & Fitment

Fitment: 100% bolt-on to factory BMW E30 Sport Seats (Symmetrical design fits either Driver or Passenger side).
Bottle Compatibility: Fits a wide range of standard 2.5 lb bottles (Kidde, Amerex, and many others).
What's Included: 1x Powder-Coated Steel Bracket, 2x BMW Mounting Bolts, 2x BMW Mounting Clip Nuts.
(Note: Fire extinguisher and the extinguisher-side bottle cradle are not included. This is for the vehicle-side adapter bracket and hardware kit).

💰 Pricing & Payment

Group Buy Price: $55 + Shipping
One-Off Price: $75 + Shipping (If you want it immediately made-to-order outside the batch)
Discounts available for higher quantities / bulk orders.
Payment Methods: PayPal (Goods & Services preferred) or Zelle.

⏱️ Timeline & Lead Time

Order Window: Orders will close in exactly 2 weeks.
Production: These are made to order. Manufacturing lead time will take about 2 weeks after the window closes.
Shipping: Kits will ship out immediately following manufacturing.
Thanks for considering! Please send me a DM if you are interested or have any questions. I am doing this in my spare time around my day job, so please be patient if I don't respond immediately.

My S52 VF 90’ Sedan - A ‘Smiles and Cries’ Story

In 2016 I purchased this lovely Delphin Grey 1990 325i Sedan from the second owner, a parts manager at the sister store to my BMW Dealership. The car had been in a “total loss” scenario of the early 00’s when it hit a deal. The original owner bought it back and replaced a hood and fender and kept it moving. I had just sold my 99’ M3 to a friend in Richmond who crashed his Racecar into the wall backwards, and bought the drivetrain back from them.

I had at this point done a couple of 24V swaps on other e30’s I’d owned and sold, none of them felt right. This car seemed to be the one. I trailered It home and drove it on the M20 until I could put my S52 in. I was In love.

The swap was eventually completed and it was such a tremendous daily driver to and from work. I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Then, a VF kit and supporting hardware went up on the classifieds, and a new mission crystallized. After a few years of building and the car being on and off the road, it is finally “complete” and I’m driving it a couple times a week.

I am currently going through such a massive car guy resurgence…my wife is nearly at the end of her rope. I feel like a little kid all over again. Car just came back from having some paint work/correction done and it’s standing tall in the garage. I’ve been thinking about posting in this section for 10 years….finally felt right!

Quick Rundown:
1990 325i Sedan
Delphin Grey
Grey Houndstooth Sport Seats
99’ S52B32
VF Supercharger
ZF 5 Speed
UUC E34 Clutch + Lightweight Flywheel
Driveshaft Shop Chromoly 1 Piece Driveshaft
S2.79 LSD - Alleged to have been built by Wangan Style

Car was poorly tuned in the late teens by TTFS and made ~400whp. The vehicle was reconfigured in the 20’s and remote tuned by one of my buddies and his buddy and runs very well on the base tune. Have not re-dynoed. Really just street the car to and from work 13 miles one way.

It’s very streetable and I’m getting ready to fit the DSS Axels that have been sitting on the shelf and maybe think about swapping the pulley for some more go juice. The driveline can take it and we’re on borrowed time on the motor anyway. I have another S52 on the shelf I’ve been thinking about taking to VAC to have a proper build done so I don’t have to keep wondering if blow by is going to turn to blow up.

ITB balancing

I 've been putting some miles on the car with new tune and dialing idle as best as I possibly can. Decided to take of ITB plenum to check if the balance is still ok from what I initially set it at. I actually forgot that when I initially was balancing it, cyl 3 and 4 were off from each other slightly. Obviously RHD ITB can only be balanced in pairs. The only way to adjust is to mess with a throttle plate. However I recall Rama's instruction not to mess with plates as they are set to account for the expansion etc etc.
Here is a video of it idling at 900rpm with Schrick 284 cam, my idle setting without AC (AC ON is 1000rpm). Cyl 2 and 3 TBs are off from each other by about 0.5-0.7 kgm or whatever this little tool shows? Should I leave it alone or mess with TB plate a little and hope it won't stick after?
