I’ll share the convertible carpet solution that worked great for me. Maybe not “the solution”, but a solution.

I also struggled to find an affordable solution for my E30 project since none are available for the convertible. What I did was use the existing carpet (slightly modified) and cover it with what's called Superflex or un-backed carpet that's available by the yard in 80” widths.

The Superflex is available in lots of colors. I chose Charcoal. I purchased mine from “Your Auto Trim Store” online. Only about $24 per yard. It is easy to work with, and I remember being surprised by how well it fit the contours of the footwell without cutting. When I say I slightly modified the existing carpet, I mean I kept all of the floor and, I believe, some of the center. The important part is that you want to retain all the foam padding that fits the footwell, which is bonded to the original carpet. I trimmed the existing carpet along the base of the footwell at each side before it made the bend upward to meet the sills at the driver's and passenger's doors, and anywhere else that had started to get too thick and bulky. I did use some Wildwood Landau top adhesive to glue the Superflex to the existing carpet where needed for a smooth, secure, factory-looking fit.
