    FS: 1985 318ia/4 now 322i 5spd

I am selling my 1985 BMW 318iA/4….that is now a 322i with 5spd. Asking $4,000 obo given the upgrades and condition. Details below.

Started life out as a 318iA, purchased new from John Roberts BMW (Dallas, TX), and upgraded by original owner to a 322i with 5spd. Lived its entire life in Dallas, TX except ~4 years in NJ / Indiana (garaged at all times in NJ and Indiana and seldom driven during winters). About the only original pieces left on the car are the glass and unibody, everything else has been upgraded or replaced. Basic information and detail on upgrades below.

    Basic Info:
    • Polaris Silber / Blue cloth interior
    • Mileage: odometer reads 249,073. Odo broke @ 247,240 but since repaired, so mileage is estimated at 255,998. This mileage only represents unibody mileage as engine, tranny, several body panels and suspension have all been replaced (see list of upgrades below)
    • No accidents. There was some very minor sheet metal damage to LF fender and LF door so both were replaced (have pictures of before and after)
    • Manual crank sunroof
    • I am owner 3 and 5. Purchased it in 2002 from the 2nd owner and worked on it meticulously for 2 yrs. Sold it to my brother for ~4 years of limited use, and purchased it back from him in 2008 as he decided to find a reliable daily driver with a comfort suspension.
    • Car is located in Dallas, TX

    List of upgrades:
    • Engine, Transmission & Exhaust:
      - Metric Mechanic 2.2L ST Sport M10
      - Bav Auto wires
      - 5 spd Getrag
      - Short shifter (Z3 linkage)
      - Metric Mechanic sport exhaust
      - Painted intake manifold and valve cover with high-temp black paint
      - 75C T-stat
    • Full suspension refresh / upgrade, including:
      - H&R sport springs
      - Bilstein sports strut / shocks
      - Strut mounts on all 4 corners
      - M3 lollipops
      - New tie rods, upper and lower control arms
      - Sway bar links
      - Rear subframe bushings
      - Hartge strut bar
      - Upgraded sway bars from 325i
    • Wheels & Brakes:
      - 15” Borbet wheels
      - 4 wheel disc brake upgrade (used set from 325i, rebuilt all 4 calipers )
      - Earl SS brake lines
      - Front: ATE power discs; Rear: solid Balos
      - Axxis Ultimate pads
    • Interior:
      - VDO 3-gauge cluster w/ voltage, oil temp and oil pressure
      - Euro analog clock
      - Crack-free dash
      - Momo sport steering wheel
      - Recaro cloth front seats (2-door compatible); custom rear seat covered in matching Recaro cloth
      - Burled walnut shifter knob
      - LED illuminated door handles
      - Keyless lock / unlock (JC Whitney system)
    • Lighting
      - Euro ellipsoids w/ 5W city lights
      - Euro front side grills with built in “brows”
      - Sylvania 55W lows, 100W highs
    • Aerodynamics
      - Hartge rear spoiler
      - 325es front spoiler
    • Body
      - Bumpers lipo’d
      - Re-sprayed in 2004 w/ Polaris Silber / Clear. Had the painter spray the mirrors, door handles, bumper guards, gutters and front / rear spoilers to match the body
      - Painted all window trim w/ SEM black trim paint for the shadowline look
    • Audio
      - BMW factory component speakers installed into factory cutouts

    List of significant maintenance items:
    • Radiator, fan & fan clutch replaced with new units as mount broke and radiator fell into coolant fan and significantly damaged (new rad is Behr)
    • Metric Mechanic curved finger water pump
    • AC replaced with R134a system
    • Programma repaired SIL
    • Passenger front wheel bearing replaced
    • Many, many more that can be provided upon request
    • Replaced heater core w/ used unit due to leak

    Recent Maintenance:
    • Oil & filter – Mobil 1 15W50 and MANN M3 filter
    • Valve cover gasket
    • New ATE clutch slave cylinder and SS clutch hose, pressure bled @ 16psi
    • New hood & trunk badges

    The issues:
    • Ignition
      - Runs rich
      - Idle RPM is inconsistent (doesn't quite fluctuate, but sits at different RPMs based on outside conditions)
    • Clear is fading in several spots and cracking in a few areas
    • VDO coolant temp gauge sticks
    • Valves are clattery. I have adjusted to factory specs per the Bentley on a cold, overnight engine and confirmed proper eccentric spacing but the valves are still loud. No wear or scarring on the cam.
    • AC worked fine until 2008 then went out. Have not diagnosed.
    • SIL bar was repaired by Programma but does not work properly. Not sure why as it was upgraded to the new, non-battery model and I have the receipt confirming repair.
    • Aftermarket stereo was stolen in 2009. The wires were cut and now the analog clock is no longer powered and there is a drain on the battery. I have not had time to troubleshoot to determine the issue

I have loads of receipts going back to the original owner. I have done my best to catalog date / mileage of all work performed on the car. The car has been garaged the past two years and only driven 25 miles at max. It’s been driven ~1,500 miles since I regained ownership of the car in 2008. I neither have the garage space nor the time to keep and maintain this car.

This BMW is not a garage queen, but it is not priced like one. I have taken my time to represent the car as accurately as possible, hence the length of this post. This is a car that needs to be sorted out and driven for pure enjoyment. I believe it is one of the lightest E30 manufactured at 2,361 lbs (only one would be 318i 2 door w/ manual sunroof), so once the running issues are sorted it should run like a scolded banshee with the MM 2.2L ST Sport and 5spd. I hope to find an enthusiast that will take good care of the care, fix the issues and get this E30 running as a daily or track car as I have spent a good amount of money and loads of hours maintaining and installing tasteful upgrades.

Additional photos can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9888117...7634640551689/.

It is priced to sell given all the choice upgrades. Please PM or email me directly (hartgeh5s_at_gmail_dot_com) if interested or if you’d like additional information or pictures.

    Thanks,

    Stephen M.
