Any pics of the head stampings? A H26 engine is basically worth for it's head, valve cover, headers, none of the bottom end is different from a regular M20.

Yes & no - YES -If its the head pkg. then it is BMW's head that's been ported/polished & has a thinner gasket to raise compression.

NO - if it's the H26 total engine package - it had a special "hartge" head that was hemispherical & special pistons to match the head. It wasn't available in the US because it didn't meet federal clean air specs. It was available in Europe, Japan & Canada. The one being offered is Canadian & could be complete engine package.

Bottom end is the same no matter if you got the head afterwards or good ol' Herbie installed it himself at beckingen. I got my H26S head from Birds a while ago and it had all the Hartge stampings as well as some serial/prod number. That's what I want to see. The other "special" Hartge head with the combustion chamber re-work and raised top pistons came on the H27/H27sp and the m20b23 H26 which is not the engine in question here. Actually the H26 kit had no head work whatsoever except the cam and head gasket, it was all bolt ons. Now, the H26S on the other hand had the PP done by Hartge or at one of their service centers. If this is in fact an "S" then it will have an "S" stamped on the head casting right next to the Hartge logo and the numbering.

The picture of the engine in Hartge's own literature isnt even a M20, but a M50??

Hartge H26 motor (paperwork from authorized BMW dealer to prove all work done).
Comes complete with all accessories, Hartge Valve cover,Headders,Motor specific tuned Hartge computer.

As this is a rare and enthusiast sought after motor, I am open to offers as it is hard to put a price tag on this as there aren't any others to compare against.
