Just because it's fun to revive a 16 year old thread, I was digging through old emails and found a link to this post. The Lemons team referenced in the last post did indeed install the engine in an E30 and raced it a few times around 2010-11. They had cut off the back of the car to make an "El Camino" but then the rules of the series changed and it meant the car was no longer eligible to race, so said car was sold to me for parts in 2011. I plucked the engine and installed it in my E30 Lemons racer which eventually became "The Homer" and has had some fame thanks to The Simpsons: https://youtu.be/qKrwCLVHSkk?si=panuK9VP6rnxVwdD
Since then we've raced it in Lemons 11 times, putting at least 8000 racing miles on the engine. Sadly, with 15 minutes left to go in our last race in October 2023, the engine started knocking with low oil pressure. Later found big chunks of main bearing in the pan. It wasn't worth it for me to rebuild it, so I plucked all the accessories, sold the long block for $300 to a guy who's going to rebuild then boost it, so it will live once more! I then bought a used M50-NV long block from a running/driving 185K mile car for $800 and swapped it in. Just got it running over the weekend. Let's hope this engine will survive the full 25 hour race we're doing in May.1 PhotoThe Homer: Powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a Nerf ball.Comment
