Most people have been doing the swap in sections over several weeks.
If you're mechanically inclined and have all the parts ready, then set aside a whole weekend - there's a great how-to thread on the forum with detailed pictures, instructions and suggestions for every step of project.
Maybe a person who has done it before could pull it off in one full day if absolutely nothing went wrong. You'd have to shell out a lot of dough to have a shop do it for you.

I would guess $1,000-1,500 just for the labor to have a shop do it.

If you're considering buying an auto and paying a shop to convert it to manual....

...buy a manual. It'll be cheaper - guaranteed - in the long run. These cars are only cheap if you do it yourself. Yes, this car is beautiful, and would benefit nicely from a 5 speed swap - but it's not worth paying someone else to do it.

Beautiful car - I love all BMW blues :)

Yeah my eta is a manual, and I have been driving it for the last 19 years -
I recently chipped it - is a blast. Any auto BMW that I have driven is approximately half the fun--with the possible exception of a 540iT that I test drove where the power was so incredible it made up for the automatic.
Why did the seller have a nice automatic painted and mod it, argrghghghgh.

Recently have learned some DIY things after my own clutch / flywheel / shifter went out and cost me $2,500 from my "former" mechanic to fix. But a conversion is too big of a project -I can't even get myself to really get into doing the timing belt on my non-runnning car.

Avus first showed up on the '95 M3. It wasn't available again until about '98 on the 328 and then again on the e46 M3. IMHO it's the best color ever! Of course I may be a little biased, here's a pic of my '95 M3.

I don't have the M3 anymore. I just have the e30 and the 2 e34's now. Plus my truck and my Harley :D

that's a nice looking Foh Doh. drive it until the auto tranny explodes and THEN do the 5-speed swap.
