I have a plastic heat sheild for a CAI system that fits an M20. This came off my 1989 325i. It has a rubber top gasket.

With this setup, will it hold the filter/AFM in place or do you still need a bracket?

It held my filter/AFM for about 2 years. I didn't trust it though and so I made a bracket to hold the AFM. I would say that you should prob. still have a bracket.
