It could be. The SI batteries directly power the temp gauge, tach, and econometer. However, you usually see all of these gauges work intermittently with dead SI batteries.

First check the grounding (7mm) nut behind the cluster. Tighten it.

Also check cluster grounds above brake pedal. They are attached to a 10mm nut and are all brown in color. You can remove the nut and clean all the ring lugs with a wire brush.

Also, check the condition of the engine to chassis ground cable. On the M20, it runs from the oil pan to the frame rail in the drivers side. Be sure the cable is in good condition free of oil or corrosion. Be sure it is secure and mounted to clean surfaces.

Finally, if you still have problems, replace the SI board batteries.

Here are some SI boards for sale...I've inspected and/or repaired each one. I would never sell an SI board that I do not feel will work 100% properly. However, I have not tested each one "in car" so I will provide exchange warranty. Or refund if I no longer carry a suitable SI board in stock.

Please notice all boards with NiCd batteries do not have them installed. This is because once you purchase the board, I will load fully charged NEW batteries. All batteries will meet or exceed OEM specifications.

Please PM me with the # board you are interested in. I will update each # with SOLD once sold. All purchases will have an invoice with warranty info on it.

#1: Earlier style VDO board (non coding plug type) Condition is 3/10. This board obtained some battery corrosion but has since been cleaned as much as possible.

            $20 shipped. 14 day warranty

#2 Newer style VDO board (coding plug type) Works with all coding plug clusters. Uses NiCd batteries, not lithium type batteries. Condition 9/10.

            $40 shipped. 14 day warranty

#3 Earlier style VDO board (non coding plug type) Condition is 2.5/10. This board obtained some battery corrosion but has since been cleaned as much as possible. Board also is a bit dirty, looks like lint or dirt accumulated on the underside of it. I sprayed and brushed off as much as possible.

            $15 shipped. 14 day warranty

#4 SOLDEarlier style VDO board (non coding plug type) COndition is 4/10. This board obtained some battery corrosion but has since been cleaned as much as possible.

            $30 shipped. 14 day warranty

#5 Newer style VDO board (coding plug type) Works with all coding plug clusters. Uses NiCd batteries, not lithium type batteries. Condition 7/10.

            $40 shipped. 14 day warranty

#6 SOLD Newer style board MOTOMETER (coding plug type) Works with all coding plug clusters. Uses NiCd batteries, not lithium type batteries. Condition 10/10.

            $50 shipped. 14 day warranty

#7 SOLD Newer style board MOTOMETER (coding plug type) Works with all coding plug clusters. Used Lithium battery type. Condition 10/10.

            $90 shipped. 14 day warranty

#8 Very rare. Earlier style VDO SI board that uses updated Lithium style batteries. Realoem specifies its use on M20 and M10 engines. This is actually the only SI board I've ever come across that is used on the older non-coding plug clusters that has Lithium batteries instead of NiCd. Condition 10/10.

            $110 shipped. 14 day warranty

Yup that is normal. That is a glue that is used to help secure the crystal oscillator onto the board. That component is critical to calculating accurate tachometer values.

It is normal to see glues across the board holding down various components.

I am planning on buying a new si board if I cannot sort out the remote battery set up problems. My board is the older style Nicad board and I wasn't sure if I can/should buy the newer style board instead (i've read that they are a better design and last longer)
If you have any advice or opinions please share them and if you would like i can PM you pictures of the board and the set up!
Thank you very much for your help!

Sorry only half my message was posted...

My temp, tach, and mpg gauge are not working at all so I pulled out the si board and made a remote battery set up that I saw on a couple other forums (using 2 radioshack rechargeable 1.2v AA batteries) The set up is unfortunately not working...

                                Thank you again
