    Woodline steering wheels

BMW accessory Nardi 365mm steering wheels. these are uber rare as far as I know. I have two of them and I think there is one more in my stash somewhere, I will update the thread when I dig it up.

wheel #1 is complete and pretty much as good as you can expect something 20 years old to be unless it was NOS which this is not - there is evidence on the slipring of it having been installed. the hub adapter is in place and complete. the horn pad is a foam piece with a hard outer shell, similar to what you'd find on an M-tech II wheel. it attaches to a floating horn button which attaches to two of the screws on the wheel itself. wheel is standard 6-bolt pattern. the horn pad has faux hex head screws on it which look like typical center of an aftermarket wheel.

please note that I have not yet test-fitted this to an E30. as most here likely know, the spline pattern on E30s is common with E34 and E36 but the offset of the wheel and the clockspring dimensions are not identical. the early E34 and all E30 share the same part number in the ETK and I believe this one is that type (though the visible part numbers don't match up, nor match the later E36 one). I will try to hook up with someone locally to check fitment and horn operation on a running E30 as mine is buried in the garage. my records show that this is a common part across E30/E34/etc which share the same steering column set-up, but I need to confirm absolutely. $400 shipped in continental US.

wheel #2 lacks the OE hub adapter and may therefore be a pretty simple install for someone with a normal 6-bolt E30 adapter. it has a ~1" scratch at the 5:00 position in the wheel, visible in this pic. the horn pad has some discoloration as compared to wheel #1. it looks like someone tried to remove the faux hex head fasteners, but they aren't really buggered up. if one wanted to get tricky you could probably pull out the faux heads and put actual screws into the foam. you will need to put together some sort of horn button to float the horn pad on as the OE set-up did, but I reckon that can be done with a bit of ingenuity. there may even be Nardi or Momo or whomever stock parts to make a floating horn pad function, I've only had the simpler center-button horn aftermarket wheels. $300 shipped in continental US.

According to my records e36 spline is course, so e30 wheels do NOT fit e36.

not correct. the Woodline which cross references with E30, E34 and E36 all share the same part number and therefore spline. it is a fine spline, like the E30. AFAIK only early E28 have coarse spline, at least in things up to E36, which is about where my deeper BMW knowledge ends.

please note ETK search for pn 82219401672 crosses both E30, E34 and E36. as stated, I need to confirm that this is indeed the E30/E34/E36 version and not the later E36 only version.

Assuming my records are correct, I will find the third wheel in the pile and compare it to the others and test fit for reach/clockspring/slipring fit on my E30 to be sure. I've fitted E30/E34/E36 wheels on all manner of each other, the issues are whether the dish/offset of the wheel moves it too close to turn signal/wiper stalks or whether the stock slipring/clockspring is too close/far to the column for correct turn signal cancelling or bottoms out on the column or column shroud. sometimes this can be eliminated with spacers, other times you lose out on turn signal or horn function.

As I noted in the OP, I will confirm how this wheel works on an E30 as well as test fit on my early E34.

not all e36 wheels work on e30 models. but if the ETK says it will work then it will work...God only knows the ETK has never been wrong..LOL 70-80% accuracy has been my experience. But if it is early model then I suppose it does work as you point out.

        GLWS. :-)

Still available? Did you test fit on an e30 yet? I'm definitely interested

haven't been able to unearth my E30 from under all the boxes in my garage, nor hook up with anyone else locally with an E30.

am going to make an attempt to do that this weekend and will post results.

I have this exact wheel on my E30 M3. It will fit well on an E30 with complete horn operation. These wheels were fitted on late model E34s. Oh yeah, and it looks amazing. And they are not as rare as the OP makes it out to be but certainly hard to find.

Did a little research and you'd actually be surprised
Here ill try to outline most of the steering wheel options that were available stock to the E30. 4 spoke "standard" steering wheel This is the as basic and standard as it gets, no air bag, no sport properties just your normal plain stock steering wheel. This is what you got if you didn't opt

we can debate relative rarity of the woodline wheel until the cows come home, but I can attest that in ~5 years of trawling the depths (and shallows, sometimes stuff is just laying right there for the catching, only slightly obscured by poorly worded auctions) that the woodline and blackline are much less common than any other OE steering wheels, the blackline in particular.

of late there seem to be a few of these <FS> on eBay from sellers in .de, which is to be expected as fewer and fewer oldtimers are left on the road and more parts end up on the market, albeit in low numbers.

hat-tip to Freude am Fahren for confirming fitment in an E30. the same part cross references to anything with the common steering column spline/spacing, so actually quite a few vehicles, as the realoem cross reference shows.

I have a blackline as well, but it's got crackly leather I have not yet determined how to clean up best.

RUFFLZ link includes another wheel I have (4-spoke ACS wood) listed here elsewhere <FS>.

get your wood any way you want !

everyone likes wood, right ? someone definitely needs one of these. if anyone is in the Detroit area, pm me, I need to confirm fitment absolutely, my car is sans almost all of the interior so it's not really representative of anything.

No one has bought one of these?!

                      Do you still have them?

I think this is one of the most beautiful wheels.

                      PM sent!

There seems to be a bit of hate in this thread, but this is a seriously sexy wheel. When I posted in my build thread that I was pulling this out in favor of something else, I had multiple PM's about selling it. I did as I was moving more towards a race build, but this is seriously one of the best feeling/looking wheels I've ever had for street use. If my car had remained a street car, I can guarantee it would still be in there.

Yes, the Woodline is a very nice steering wheel, and it is the first thing people ask me about when they get in my car. It feels great in the hand and really classes-up the interior. My only minor complaint is that I can't see the tops of my gauges like I could with my original wheel. **Smaller Diameter**

The prices in this thread are very good by the way. I feel like a chump now for paying $400 for one shipped from the UK. Mine did come with the hub and all mounting hardware, so I guess I can't complain.
