How exactly do these work? Is there an additional slider for the headliner piece that works independently? Or will cranking open the moonroof, force the headliner piece back as well?

Did some Research and I'm missing the 2 bottom base pieces pictured above. The metal cross member is included.

The sunshade uses the same tracks in the roof that the water channel and roof panel do. It can't help but open when you open the panel. Read the manual I posted above, it shows all parts and diagrams how everything works.

Do you have the pieces at the bottom too?

The 2 plates are for vanity purposes; they hide the mechanism from view when the shade is open. You don't "need" them for it to be operational, you'll just see the mount points of the glass when the shade is open. You have to install the regular ones to adjust the panel, then remove them and install the special ones to finish up.
