Will the VDO cluster work in a car that came with a motometer cluster?

I'm not 100% sure, but the whole VDO vs. motometer thing is bullshit I think. I've taken apart clusters with one type stamped on the outside and half the gauges inside, and the other type on the other half of the gauges.

I can't confirm that a VDO from an '89 would work in an '87 that already has a Motometer though.
