Yes that why wheels made for e36 and newer are perfect to run with adapters on e30's.

As a side benefit this also allows room for most BBK's.

Folks do run the e38 style 5's and style 4's which are et23 with 18mm adapters. Both of those wheels are 16x8. You'd probably want at least a mild fender roll and maybe square to baby stretch on your rubber but final offsets of 0-5 are not uncommon.
