I talked to Tubular at lunch today and got some questions answered. They are currently looking into pricing and availability of the material and should have that on Monday.

I confirmed that the headers have 1 3/8" OD primaries.

    Thanks for organizing this.
    They said sure no problem.

They said the place that's doing the coating has been doing coatings for 20 years. The coating that is used on the cone of the space shuttle was developed by the guy who's running the shop. With specific regard to the headers, the process is as follows:

    1. Chemical dipped to clean them
    2. Blasted to remove any scale or other debris that the dip did not remove
    3. Coated inside and out
    4. Baked
    5. Blasted with softer media (i.e. walnut shell)
    6. Second coating on outside
    7. Baked
    8. Polished in a bead tumbler

I was told the second coating is done just so that when they are polished it's not removing material from what would be the protective layer.

I'll ask the guy building the headers to give some feedback on the coating. Other than that I can't say anything about the coating. If you're skeptical, you can always buy an uncoated set and take them to a coater that you know does quality work.

Crap, I Rallycross my car and need every millimeter of clearance I can find. I have the i exhaust system solidly bolted way up in there, and I still hit the flanges on the the mid-pipe/muffler sometimes. How much of a beating would they stand up to?
