Dumb question but I have an 88 model and I hear they came with upgraded strut towers. Would these still be necessary. More protection could never hurt I know

Wont hurt! We run them on our 88.

Sounds like one washer will suffice. You want a good amount of thread still engaged.

Quick question, for top mounting; not sure if the PO added the washers or if this is in fact stock. I have two washers per bolt on each tower, when the plates are installed they are roughly 3/4 on the threading from being flush with the top of the nut(reinforcement and 2 washers installed) should one or both washers be removed to make the nut and bolt flush or should it be as described?

Although this can work for your application and will stop the clunking, welding it in for that certain situation may be best.

The 13mm nut on my rear shock stower broke through the frame. So now i have a clunk. Im not planning to weld this in.
Would this still solve my problem? Any other solutions?
