A photo of the rack itself (can leave out the tie rods) would be nice.

What's the center-center distance on the mounting holes?

About how far are the mounting holes from the centerline of the rack?

How thick (vertically) are the mounting hole bosses? Are they centered on the rack centerline?

i can do that. its going to be a several days before i get home, but i'll take care of it.

        Thanks!

Between the E46 xi and E36 racks, we'll figure out a replacement rack that can work.

Ooooooook guys, now i have the engine, trans, TC, front ds, CV-shafts (without outer CVs as im rebuilding them) and diff installed in the car! It all clears now but its never going to work like i have it now with rubber mounts, you will need delrin or similar (wich im going to use anyway)

The good thing is that you can remove th TC, gearbox and front diff without moving the engine or subframe. The bad thing is that you (as you already know) have to fuck up the firewall and cut here and there around the TC to make it fit :P

The engine sits 3cm more to the rear compared to my RWD E30 M50.

Will post pics later if u want to see.

3 cm? That's ~1 1/4"... which means I'm on the right track for the rack move on the crossmember.

            Please do post pics.

You cant just move the rack, the CVs will hit the front subframe :(

Im uploading pics so stay tuned but as the engine sits now its like 4-5mm between the CVs and subframe.

So what do you think? Does this look right?:) (except the firewall haha)

still to far back IMO (if the e30 rack fits, that is) but I see what you mean about the CV shaft now. hmm. that could be difficult to solve. if you're good with cutting the firewall I think that position will work for you!

My M50ix trans should be done this week or next, which I'm kind of excited about - I've only been waiting since August of last year, lol. But I'll be able to do some more complete mock ups in the next month or so..

Yeah with the engine this far back, all stock parts like the rack, subframe etc can be used.

Would be nice with more mockups :)

what really doesn't sound good is the CV shaft, from what you posted even the suspension pickup will have a large issue if you moved the engine forward enough. it's almost touching the inner balljoint where you have it already!

at this point I'm wondering if a custom oil pan built for an E46 or E53 diff and E34 shafts makes more sense. one thing I don't love about the E34 parts is you are stuck with 3.38 and the diffs themselves are pretty rare. in E46 and E53 there are a ton of ratios available..

Yes the CV is a problem and the ratio sucks, i would like 2.65-2.93 or something like that.
Dont know if there is a E46/E53 diff with such ratios?

We have alot of used E34 front diffs though, 2-300 $ a piece :)

because you're using a ZF correct?

I think there are some but they are from diesels. not common here but perhaps common there.

a few years ago I went through and looked up every front diff ratio I could find:

                                Code:
                                E30 ix	4.10	3.91	3.73	3.64
                                E34 ix	3.38
                                E46 M3	3.62
                                E46 ix	3.91	3.46	3.23	3.07	2.93	2.35
                                X5	4.10	3.91	3.23
                                X3	4.10	3.91	3.73	3.64	3.38	3.07	2.93	2.81
                                E60 ix	4.10	3.73	3.46	3.23	2.56
there are definitely ratios that you could use more favorably with the ZF and I assume a turbo if you want something that tall..
