So far I have $68 into my roller paint job. I'll probably hit $100 before I'm done.

anyone know a good body shop in massachusetts that will do body work and paint for a good price, i still wanna paint it myself, but i suck at body work and dont really have time for that, and i know my car would need a decent amount.

Maaco uses DuPont paint. $500 gets you any color in single stage. Double it for base/clear.
To buy just the materials to do a non-standard color in cheapo Kirker paint myself will set me back $350+. Factory color? Probably double.
Still debating if I want to shoot it myself or let Maaco blow overspray all over it.

Screw up the ozone for the rest of us painting it outside why dont you. J/K lol you need to look in your local yellow pages for a auto body shop supple house and talk with them on the paints they carry. If you have more than one in the area they will carry different brands. PPG is probably a favorite but I am going to be honest with you. The supplies for this are not cheap !!! You can easliy spend $400+ for all supplies just to paint your car. When a shop will charge you around $1200+. So my question is ? Is it really worth the savings do this yourself. One way to save is do all the body work and prep your self and then have a shop do a light prep and shoot for you. The body work and prep is what cost you the coins. I fix a few cars up every year and do the body work myself and then take to a local shop called Peaches and get a base coat/clear coat job that with a light wetsand it looks like a $2000+ job for only $185. But when I take the car to them all they have to do is very little taping since I have already taken everything off the car that will come off (lights,trim,moldings,gaskets,etc....) except windows since the glued in ones sometime break taking them out. I even 400 wet sand them before they get it. To get good bondos and hardners and sandpapers etc you will spend around $150 to do your car. And if you could find a shop like Peaches you would be done for around $400 for all of it except a wetsand and buff.

I thought he was going to use the tent for prepping the car for paint, not to actually paint it. You're probably going to need some kind of ventilation/extraction system to minimize dirt in the paint/clear.

My rolled paintjob looks just as good as that. I think that all DIY paintjobs will turn out relatively the same quality... mainly bc you dont have all those expensive tools to do the job perfect like a professional.

I did not remove the front and rear windows. I simply masked around the trim. Would it have made a difference? Yea. Would it have been noticeable? no. Not worth that extra work.

To add, I just learned about Duplicolor's new do-it-your-self paint. Take a look:

Seems pretty cool, and it comes in quite a few colors.

Well I'm a painter at a dealership and I could give you some tips....

    * Have some kind of closed space(booth) with good illumination, you need to be able to see what you're doing, specially when laying down your clear.

    * Prep the car and take off all trim, including windows if possible, if not, buy "lifting tape" and make sure you lift the seals of the windows to get paint underneath.

    * Mask up door jams and under the hood and trunk, look for "transition tape" from 3M, helps hard lines be less noticeable.

    * Clean up car with solvent 330 or 394, or both... it's not worth shit if your paintjob has boulders on it.

    * Seal, basecoat, clear.... there's no "by the book" way of painting, you just gotta feel it.

Spend about 95% of your time prepping the car making sure it's perfect... that's the difference between a good paintjob and an ok one.

If you have any questions on what materials to use feel free to PM me and ask.

Good luck! Post pics of your progress!!!

Car Craft (I know, I know...) did a good series about body prep and painting a few months ago. I reccomend it!
