1987 metal bumpers question

Euro bumpers are the easiest swap for an early model, but are hard to find and are expensive. Looks like this:



Late model plastic bumpers can be fitted, but require the work JasonC posted about. They look like this:



M-tech 1 kits only fit early models with euro bumpers, M-tech 2 kits only fit late models.

There are aftermarket M-tech 1 and 2 bumpers made of fiberglass that will fit either late model or early model, but require work to make them fit. Most do not come with any kind of mounting brackets so that part is up to you.

you will also need to cut the tow hooks- I believe off the car. buddy of mine put euro bumpers on and they are SWEET!

The convertible bumper mounts/shocks are shorter than the coupe/sedan. I used vert supports to shorten up those diving boards. Should've taken a before and after to post on here. Makes a decent difference and looks a lot cleaner. Costs me nothing except a can of rust penetrant and about an hour or so of time. Why buy when you can build ;)

This. If you don't like the early cars with metal bumpers, don't buy one and ruin it.

Yes, stock plastic bumpers from 89-91 will work, but since you got an early model, you'll still have to do what the 2nd link I posted up.

But here is some help.

The front is straight bolt on. You do need to cut the tow hooks though.

Here is a write up, it's not Mtech2 but it is the plastic bumper swap, http://www.r3vlimited.com/tech/bumper/bumper1.htm I'll let someone chime in on the Mtech2 stuff...

The rear will need some work, due to the arch difference. http://www.r3vlimited.com/tech/bumper/bumper2.htm Factory Mtech2 rear is one piece, where aftermarket will be two piece from what I've been seeing.

Paint and tuck them, they wont look near as bad. Spend the money on other parts.

Sure, plastic bumpers are better than the USDM diving boards but they're not right for an early chassis.

I dont believe that you will be able to bolt on a back bumper without body work. The rear arches pre 88 are different. The front will bolt on though.
