Steaming it off is the only way to go. No legitimate shop uses Ammonia anymore.

Yes, I'd definitely try the steam cleaner first. You could do the ammonia and black plastic bag thing, but I'm not a fan of that method.

Edit: Found a site that talks about using window cleaner with ammonia, that may work.

i took the window tint off of every window on an 87 325is, all i used was windex/ammonia combo, and a razor blade. easiest way IMO. the rear windshields a bitch though

Get the tint started at a corner or if you have to take a single edge razor blade and get it started. Be careful as the razor can scratch your glass. Pull off the tint with your hands. It should come off in one piece or several somewhat large pieces. If not you will have to take it off carefully with the razor blade(remember sharp blades work better and may take several of them). Once all the tint is removed you should take a water squirt bottle and mix it 50% amonia and 50% water and shake it. Spray solution on a part of the window and let it soak a few minutes(2-5) and you can either take the SHARP razor blade and scrape the glue off or can take a copper choy boy(copper pot and pan scrubber) and go in light small circular motions to loosen glue up. Once it is loose you wipe with a paper towel(may need to take 5 or so together and fold) and wipe the glue off and flip to a clean section of paper towel and wipe again. Repeat over and over until the entire window is done. The plastic bag method works great but better with hot sun and since its winter time you might not be able to create enough heat for it to be effective.


The chore boy method will more than likely be your safest method to keep from scratching your glass. Seems like german glass for some reason is softer than domestic glass. These are methods we used on a daily basis at a tint shop I worked at forever ago and even continued using them when I had my detail business from 1993-2001.

When I was a detailer we used glass cleaner with high ammonia content and razor blades. Works wonders.
