I steamed everything and it helped a lot for everything but I guess the headrests didn’t expand enough. I also used a heat gun to tighten the leather up a little, but also installed them in the car to let them sit for a couple weeks and then hit them with some leather conditioner once they’ve tightened up even more.

I actually opted for no piping when ordering but they went ahead and did it anyways. I would have much preferred them with out it. If I didn’t have rips I would have just cleaned mine up, yours turned out very good.

With the tilt mechanism, I had a similar issue with mine.
While I was replacing the seat shocks and cable, I sprayed some brake cleaner down the ratcheting mechanism to clear out the old grease, fluff, and debris that was causing the spring to bind.
Make sure you protect the leather with some plastic or cloth from the run-off.
In the end I didn't go down the path of recovering.
With some hours cleaning, conditioning and fixing the broken parts the seats are back to new. Painted seat rails and a new seat belt buckle make it worth it.
Even the cat approves.

Thats hot! Be ready for all the compliments you'll be getting about your interior, it never gets old. Haha. For some reason, lots of e30 owners seem to neglect their interior. Congrats.
Make sure the passenger tilt handle is pressed all the way down so that the seat locks in place.

Been neglecting posting photos because i still need a couple things to finish the interior, but the front seats are done with the exception of the seat shocks. I am having trouble with the passenger side tilt locking. It won't lock in any position other than furthest forward. I am happy how they turned out though, sorry for the crappy iphone pics.

Looking at the design I’m guessing the ring will be in a much more accessible position to anchor stuff down.

That’s the video I’ve been referring to in my recent posts, and why I was going to get some fabric adhesive. For those of you who used adhesive, did it help keep the edges down while you staples/hog ringed? Perhaps I’m just being too gentle with the foam/hog rings? To me it seems as if there are upholstery specific hog ring pliers because both of the ones I have engage the ring 1/2” or more into the pliers and I just cannot manage to get them deep enough so the ring can go through both the foam and leather.
