I have a problem with my gauge cluster. I had a perfectly working gauge cluster in my 1987 325 eta. I’m doing a 2.8i build and so I wanted to switch the cluster for the higher tach. I pulled the old cluster and put one in off a 1987 325i.
The odometer in the new cluster didn’t work so I put the odometer from my old one in it. All the gauges function well except for the MPG stays stuck at 20 and the main gauge lights won’t light up. Everything worked well before the swap and my headlight dimmer switch still dims the hvac. I drove the car that I pulled the cluster from and half of the lights worked in it previously. So now I’m kind of lost.
I would just swap the tach over but it doesn’t fit in my old cluster!
I’ve done quite a bit of searching and it seems that everyone had a problem with the dimmer switch. I also read about some batteries in the cluster that might need replaced but I don’t totally understand how those function. I kind of got the impression from my reading that if the batteries went bad the gauges would as well.
