One of my smilies had the reflective coating flaking off of it. I got some high temp metallic tape and lined it with that stuff. Didn't make a fucking bit of difference.

YMMV, but it seems that aluminum foil and similar stuff isn't really reflective enough to make a night-and-day difference.

well i looked at new euro reflectors and they are 100 my cost a piece. fuck that. i just painted them with chrome paint 2 days ago and while it doesnt look great it looks about the same as your foil job.. i just dont want to drop 2 bills on new reflectors. thanks for the tips however

I wouldn't bother too much other than for looks, the HID light does not need an actual reflector due to the projector lens. You could paint them any color you want and it shouldn't affect the light output.

This is the only reason why I'm scared to take my headlights apart.
I don't want to break anything, because I don't know if I'll be able to find good spares for cheap...

I've used chrome paint in MGB turn signal housings and it worked pretty well, however, I don't think it would work well enough for headlights. Might be a good temp solution until you get new ones though.

I also tried spraying clear reflective paint over the chrome and all it did was dull the chrome. The chrome by it self was much more reflective than the reflective paint by itself.

The other thing to consider with paint is issues with it sticking to the plastic. The turn signal housing I did were metal, so the paint stuck fine, but on plastic, I'm not so sure. I've had bad luck with getting regular spray paint not meant for plastic to stick.

DDM 55W 6000k H1 but i think i can just swap 3 screws and make it work.

As far as the HID's, what kit did you buy? I'm sure someone would buy it off you so you could get the 9006. Maybe i'll talk Levent into getting yours for his touring.

except i already bought an H1 HID kit. i think the metal cage on the back is interchangeable though isnt it???

You could also just use the US ellip reflector, but then youd have to use the 9006 HID kit and not H1's. Don't see why that would be a big deal, though.

And to add to that, if you used the US ellip metal cage and lens, you'd retain the US spec cutoff _-- instead of _/

Yeah, just tossed them. I looked into the chrome plating deal with a few companies, and it would've ended up costing too much.

One other thought, if you could get some thin sheet metal and conform it into the shape of a bowl or cone, it would be much cheaper to chrome that. Then just glue it into the housing.

Picture the inside of the turn signal housing. Get it?

Let me know, i have a few sets of lights i could take apart and try this on.

i actually have 3 or 4 sets of ellips out in the garage mahal. i guess i should start taking them apart to see whats good. thanks for the tips

Had the same happen to me, only all i did was rinse them under cold water. The stuff still flaked off. I bought some "chrome" paint, and it just did not come close.

Try this. Take your washed dechromed housings in one hand, and a separate known good chrome housing in the other. Stick the HID bulb in each one and compare the output.

I'm going to guess by saying that without the chrome reflectors, not enough light will be diverted into the lens and thus projected.
