    Battery Terminals Switched??

So I encountered something very strange on my '88 SETA... The battery's in the trunk, and when I tried starting my car the other day I couldn't even get a click out of it. I tossed some jumper cables on the terminals, and they started smoking. I tried again, and it sapped my E39's battery. I was so freaked that I stopped any attempts to rehabilitate the E30 until I remembered my $25 recharger in the garage.

I took the battery out, recharged for a bit (in the meantime, jumped the E39 back to life) and then dropped the battery back in the E30. At this point I thought it would at least give me a click. Instead sparks flew at me when I attempted to put the terminals back in place, and I noticed that a short circuit was happening where it shouldn't.

Then I saw that initially, the battery had been put in backward, and that the terminals weren't matching up with the cables running to the car when the E30 was running... Therefore I speculated that this was the reason I had trouble with my jumper cables almost catching on fire.

Now the battery's in the garage, charging s'more because when I dropped it in, the only change I got was that the lights and locks worked again.

Anyone seen the + and - cables switched up before? I thought the guy who sold me the thing might've helped me out by mentioning this strange inconsistency...
