Finally got it, the OP(? is that correct? owner previously?) had decided to bend all the tabs in the outer shell in and out so that they stuck to the hvac panel and into the stereo, it was a bitch to say the least. but got the new unit installed!

I've always had a hard time JUST removing the HVAC panel... guess it's just me. It's why I HATE working on 13 button OBC's. Although I would like to install one in my car... ahhhhh e30 mod addiction.

Oh sorry for the OT. Yes there is no reason the Sony keys shouldn't work. As Luke said, just feel around in there a bit and you'll be able to get it out.

thats not the easy way. the hvac panel isnt hard to remove but its alot more difficult than pulling the stereo out

I'll give her another go tonight, if i dont get any luck, I'll just pull the dash cover, and take the whole mounting out, and figure it out the easy way.

pull equally, if youre pulling on the right side harder than the left youre probably just gettin it in a bit of a bind, of course if you arent getting the left side to click in this wont help at all

ok, or it doesn't post what i said! I tried using a pair of pioneer pullers, they click in, and the right side pulls out a bit, but the left side doesn't seem to. picking up some sony ones tonight.

well i dont know if this would change anything, but i tried getting it out with the removal keys provided with my alpine deck, they click into place for the sony, but it doesnt come out. but i will pick up some removal keys tommorow and give her a go. thanks!

All you need are 2 sony "keys", they slip into slots on either side of the deck and release the latch tabs.
