    Blown Engine. Next step?

Hey R3V team!!, I got a 1985 318i from my uncle as a gift since he cant drive anymore. I always made sure to keep on the oil change and maintenance, but the engine ended up shooting a rod. I did some spirited driving but never redline or straight abuse. I have a couple questions. I found some replacement engines from other 318s but they are higher milage. I was wondering which other year/models have direct fit swaps? I was looking at doing m50 swaps also but i saw how some people got parts mixed up and it ended up being a nightmare so im kind of weary.

If I do get a replacement m10, I plan on getting the heads cleaned and refreshed at a machine shop, arp studs and mls head gasket. I was wondering where can i get a timing chain parts for it and a oil pump any good recommended sites. Cant keep to find them and what else should i refresh? Or even if replacing the bearings and rings are a good idea. Thank you very much. I want to keep this thing going i admired this car since i saw my uncle driving it when i was younger. !!!

if you had any oil in the oil pan it would not cause the rod bearing failure. What I believe is that you overrevved the engine, selected lower gear while car was moving fast. M10 engines only came out in two years 1984 and 1985 and then you only need a good long block, but then why would you put ARP studs and MLS head gasket on M10? What is sad here is that your uncle drove that 318i for many years and it was a good car until you started driving it

if you threw a rod you're gonna need a replacement engine. whatever you refresh will depend on the health of the replacement. that needs to be determined first. an engine swap from an m10 to any other motor will require upgrading and replacing other components along with it. things like transmissions, differentials, driveshafts, brakes, suspension etc are all different than the m10 version of the e30.

What do you mean by "shooting a rod"? Is it typical rod knock from a spun bearing, or does your block have a hole in it? If it's just a spun bearing, I don't see why you couldn't just rebuild the bottom end. To answer your question, your next step should be to assess the damage and see exactly what is usable and what needs replacement. Is the head still good or are the valves bent, is the block still usable, do you need a new crank or can it be reground, etc.

You sound like you're pretty young with little experience with cars and probably not a lot of money. My advice is to forget about mods and first learn how to work on the car, and get it back into good running factory condition. Fixing the engine will obviously be your first big job.

It'd be a real feat to get a rod to eject from an E30 M10.
You can run them without water for days, and they'll seize,
but once they cool down, they'll start right up again and keep going.

OP, this thread needs engine destruction pictures...
