HowStuffWorks has been explaining how things work to curious minds since 1998. Providing factual, unbiased content that's fun to read and makes difficult topics easy to understand.

Why the hate on MS? I've used them on previous cars with great success.

    [i]I have a 85 318I, It's a great motor

First question, is valve tick usual? It's been ticking, I am 99% sure it's valves, I was told if I adjust them they may be a tad quieter but not silent. They all do that, it's called valve-lash

Second, when should the timing chain be swapped, and is there anyway to tell when it's getting old, or the tensioner? When it gets so loud you hear it, and it ain't valve lash

Tip: Get a Callaway turbo set-up.

It's a great engine 4 more horse power definitely put a blower, or turbo on it. The M10 is an excellent design based off a Formula 1 block.

Callaway? Ok, so he can be stuck in 1986.

Based on F1 block? eehhh.... lets get the fact straight.

The great "1500hp" f1 engines use 2002 blocks.

OP, get a megasquirt, a bb header or goodntight and a ebay t3/t4 if you want to blow some stuff up. Any real turbo setup takes serious dough, and you will probably end up grenading it soon if you dont sink enough money into it.

Guys it only made 359rwhp not 470 but actually over 400hp at the flywheel.
I still make manifolds for $420 shipped, made from schedule 40 pipe and will work with A/C.
The cheapy boostbrothers manifold will not work with A/C.
