    anyone know about timing chains?

i saw thread posted regarding timing chain and tensioner in the m10 engine. i have a 1984 318i with 200,000 and something on it, I was wondering how important it is to get these replaced as i dont know the history of the car. i read somewhere that the timing chain wont break , and that the car runs better when the timing chain stretched out as much as possible. any of this true.? hope you can help,
    thanks
