    '86 325e & '87 325is relay swapping / starting issues

my 86 325e has twice in the past month refused to start? but after a short period of time and the wiggeling of relays it then fires up?

I decided to get some relays from autohausaz to keep in the glove box in case of future issues. I got a geniune BMW fuel injection relay DME motronic white 5 pin with 5 prong for $15 and I also got a bosch relay with diode this is a 12v 30 amp orange has the mounting notch and is a 4 prong connector $10

So wierdly today I jump in the 86 to get the kids from school and it wont fire up? I grab the relays and traded them out first the fuel injection relay and nothing.

I was very late so I got the keys to the 87 and headed to school to get the kids who were in the school office and the teachers were not happy LOL

When I got home I started checking fuses and swapping relays nothing worked to get the car to start? I am thinking I now have a bigger problem, I get thru some of the other articles and it seems the main relay or the fuel relay would the next logical choice.

I go back to autohausz website to verify part numbers and find that the fuel relays are very expensive bosch and BMW are like $112 /$117 so I decide to just use a relay from the running 87 is but they look different so now I am worried that I could fry something damn!!!

Again to autohausz website to look up the part numbers between the 86E and 87is for the fuel relay the 86 shows a 4 prong and the 87 shows a 7 prong so I decide to see if I can use like a horn relay or something else to try and at least try to start the 86E

I pull the main relay box open and the in the process the little two prong wire adapter crumbles , the plastic is just very brittle and it was a round adapter that had two holders on the side of the main relay box it has a brown and black wire that go to solid posts that then plug into small sockets. I need to get this replaced anybody know what the best way is to go about that?

At any rate I pulled the fuel relay from the 87is and it was not a 7 prong but a 4 prong and again the small adapter two post socket thing on the outside of the main relay box crumbled and broke exposing the two wires and the solid leads that plug into the socket holder these wires are white and red I think.

Turns out the 4 prong fuel relay from the 87 fit in the slot just fine for the fuel relay on the 86 so against my better judgement I try to start the 86 and it fires right away and runs then lowers to idles no problem?

I then compare the relay I bought with the relay I just took out of the 87 for the fuel relay it looks very close so I put the bosch w diode 12v 30 amp 4 prong in the slot for the fuel relay on the 86 after I took the one out I stole from the 87 and yes it fired again and ran no problem.

I put the other fuel relay back in the 87 where I stole it from and then fired up the 87 it ran fine no prob seemed to be all good.

So the I left the new bosch replacement relay in the slot for the fuel relay on the 86 and its running fine also.

I really dont know if I solved my problem because I also put the original fuel relay back in the 86 and I started again but not at first or as quickly as it did with the relay from the 87 or like it did with the bosch relay I bought from autohausaz.

I think maybe the fuel relay was failing or maybe just cleaning up the prongs helped things out really not sure, sorry for the long post hope this helps others with similar problems.

    Question #1, is it alright to use that 30 amp 12v bosch relay with diode in my 86 for the fuel relay without causing damage { it's running currently}
the bosch part number is 0332019456 on autohausz website

Question #2 how can I replace that lead holder socket with the two prongs that has the two wires 86 has black & brown 87 has red & white, it is on the outside of the relay box that has the main / fuel / oxygen, it is held by 2 plastic clips and it sits horizontally. the plastic crumbled to nothing

Question #3 did a previous owner of my 87 replace the fuel relay from a 7 prong to a 4 prong? they are the bright orange bosch maybe? Should I try to put the fuel relay back to a 7 prong?

thanks in advance I just want to fix the car the right way not causing future damage and avoid being stuck without a ride and of course not damage the other car by swapping things around to much thanks in advance
