Need some info for timing belt / water pump reassembly

    Hi All,

Just got everything taken apart for the water pump / timing belt / camshaft seal and will start putting it back together tomorrow or Monday.

I've been reading through several threads and DIYs on forums and Pelican, but I have some (probably generic) questions that aren't addressed in a lot of them. I had ordered the Bentley from Amazon but it hasn't arrived yet.

My questions revolve around sealants/anti-seize/thread lockers and where to use them when I put this all back together.
    • Anti Seize
      • I'd like to put a bit of anti-seize on just about every set of bolts I put back in.
      • Are there any threads where anti-seize would specifically be a bad idea?
    • Liquid sealants
      • Water pump
        • It appears there are people that swear on both sides of this -- either "clean everything and the paper gasket works by itself" or "just use a smear of RTV on both sides of the gasket and don't worry about possibly having to take it apart again".
        • I'm going with the latter.
      • Camshaft seal
        • Planning on putting regular motor oil on the O-Ring
        • What kind of sealant should go on around the seal itself? I'm assuming I just smear it on the outside of the seal and then press the seal into the little aluminum holder?
    • Thread lock
      • Not planning on putting thread lock on anything.
      • Should I?

Also, I need to find torque values, and I'm assuming I can hunt them down. But if anyone has a link with some quick values, I would appreciate it! :)

    Thanks for the help!

    Okay... so... simpler question. :)

Do people use sealant for the cam seal / o-ring? How often have people had them leak when not using sealant?

    Thanks,

    Som

I can't think of anything in a timing belt swap that requires anti seize or thread locker. The cam seal just needs some motor oil on the lip and no harm in using an anaerobic sealer on its outside perimeter (although its really not necessary).

I prefer Permatex non hardening on both sides of the wp gasket and have never had one leak. Rtv IMO is only good for temporary or emergency use.

+1 for permatex aviation cement on the waterpump gaskets (called #3). Just make sure the surface of the block is clean and free from old gasket or corrosion (gasket scraper + a bit of wet and dry sandpaper for cleanup works).
Just a little project im working on
