I have a recent stumble/power loss/engine RPM slowness.
I did a head gasket about a month ago. Car idled and run great for 2-3 weeks. Lots of power and response.
Over last 2 weeks or so I started experiencing what I could describe as "loss of power", I guess.
Here are the symptoms when it's wormed up:
It idles at 700 hundred or so OK but it likes to bump every now and then a bit. You cannot see it on a tach, but you feel it.
Where it gets weird is that when you stomp the accelerator (while parked) the RPM increase isn't what it's used to be. It's quick, but not almost instant as before. Also, it feels as it the engine is resisting to go and feels "less smooth" - or louder then usual.
This of course translates to a much more hesitant response in any gear. Particularly the higher you go: in 4th or 5th gear the usual daily street driving throttle increases seem to result in negligible acceleration rates.
The mileage dropped, of course and it's even noticeable on the little mileage gauge that the needle reads lower mileage in the same situations it used to. I'd rate it at 10 to 15% difference.
I guess the very power loss causing the above, makes the car stumble when I'm not careful with the clutch/throttle modulation when starting from a dead stop.
I haven't done any serious troubleshooting yet, other than the obvious ear based vacuum or exhaust leak tests.
What would you guys suggest as the top 3-5 items on the usual suspect list for me to narrow my testing/shopping list.
