What if the noise is present at all times when the clutch is engaged, including while driving in-gear? But does away any time the clutch pedal is pressed in?

I'm with the fiddler on this one. It's the throw out bearing.

From what I have been told, and from searching. The noise seems to be the output shaft bearing (23121224164). This problem is usually caused by the shims wearing out between the bearing and housing cover.

You posted the part number for input shaft bearing, the output shaft bearing is PN#23121224166, correct? I am in the same boat, and am hunting for answers. How tough a job is this, if you have no problem pulling the trans on your back, in a freezing garage, 3 or 4 times in a row? Whats the best way to diagnose this, cause I have a whole extra tranny waiting for me to toss in.

It could be. But normally you hear the throw out bearing when you have the clutch disengaged (pedal to the floor) and it goes away when you have the clutch engaged. So since he describes something that is the exact opposite of what a throw out bearing normally sounds like, that would lead to the internet diagnosis of the Getrag rattle (since we can't hear it for real).

Thanks for all the input... I think when I replace clutch I will just replace everything down below. My neighbor was a bmw mechanic for 20 years and he sais its the bearing. He said they all have a slight wining sound but mine is a little bit on the loud side..yeah more fricken money to spend... I should of just done a frame off restoration at this point... lol Thanks again

99% it's the throwout bearing, sure it could something more mysterious but as a tech, all of the cars I've encountered that have had this issue have been the result of a worn out throwout bearing. This is specifically why I stated to take the car to a BMW SPECIALIST because they will be not only equipped to properly diagnose the noise but also responsible for any work done to fix it.

"Getrag rattle" is what the syndrome is commonly known as. It is thus useful when looking for more information about the subject. On the other hand, complete misdiagnosis like "oh it's the throwout bearing" is not useful.

It's like saying "You probably have a broken arm" versus "the weather in France is 12˚ Celsius" when someone comes to you with an injury.

Yes, I agree about the throwout bearing. However, he has a noise that's there at idle and goes away with the clutch in. That means that when the input shaft is spinning with no load, it rattles around a bit, hence the getrag rattle.
