What if the noise is present at all times when the clutch is engaged, including while driving in-gear? But does away any time the clutch pedal is pressed in? -

That is exactly what my neighbor mechanic said...Looks like im heading in the right direction. Thanks,

I dont agree with this. I have the same problem with my trans to.
All my seals, clutch, TO bearing are brand new OEM parts right from the dealer. Shit I even got my fluid from the dealer.
I still have the same noise with only 1000 miles on all the parts.
From what I have been told, and from searching. The noise seems to be the output shaft bearing (23121224164). This problem is usually caused by the shims wearing out between the bearing and housing cover.
You posted the part number for input shaft bearing, the output shaft bearing is PN#23121224166, correct? I am in the same boat, and am hunting for answers. How tough a job is this, if you have no problem pulling the trans on your back, in a freezing garage, 3 or 4 times in a row? Whats the best way to diagnose this, cause I have a whole extra tranny waiting for me to toss in.Leave a comment:

All the fluids were changed with Redline from the start.... Fuck it, gonna replace clutch and all bearings down there and seals
wonder how much thats all gonna set me back....lolLeave a comment:

It could be. But normally you hear the throw out bearing when you have the clutch disengaged (pedal to the floor) and it goes away when you have the clutch engaged. So since he describes something that is the exact opposite of what a throw out bearing normally sounds like, that would lead to the internet diagnosis of the Getrag rattle (since we can't hear it for real).Leave a comment:

Do yourself a favor and fill the trans with Redline MTL or MT-90 before you spend a ton of money. I think the fiddler makes some valid points, but IMHO you could have getrag rattle and it is a common issue. Seriously, spend the half hour and $25 before you go nuts on the car. Humor me and tell me what happens... if I am wrong, you are only out a few bucks.Leave a comment:

Thanks for all the input... I think when I replace clutch I will just replace everything down below. My neighbor was a bmw mechanic for 20 years and he sais its the bearing. He said they all have a slight wining sound but mine is a little bit on the loud side..yeah more fricken money to spend... I should of just done a frame off restoration at this point... lol Thanks againLeave a comment:

99% it's the throwout bearing, sure it could something more mysterious but as a tech, all of the cars I've encountered that have had this issue have been the result of a worn out throwout bearing. This is specifically why I stated to take the car to a BMW SPECIALIST because they will be not only equipped to properly diagnose the noise but also responsible for any work done to fix it.Leave a comment:

It's like saying "You probably have a broken arm" versus "the weather in France is 12˚ Celsius" when someone comes to you with an injury.Leave a comment:

I disagree, the rattle will be more of a rattle and highly prevalent with a lightweight flywheel but a high pitched whine or screech which changes (or in the early stages goes away) when the clutch is disengaged is the throwout bearing. Get your car to the nearest BMW specialist ASAP and do everything you can possibly think you might need while the tranny is out. Clutch kit, rear seal if leaky, input shaft seal... You get the idea!
Good luck!

saying it is 'getrag rattle' over determining the specific mechanical part in question (throwout bearing) is like saying a car has 'a lot of pep in it', rather than 'it has 170hp'.Leave a comment:
