Top speed by Wanganstyle; LSD Diff Puzzle thread; ask me to spill beans here!!!

    LSD seems to be a popular subject these days;

I will try to answer things I know definate answers to in this thread.

    There are 3 Era's of E30/36/34/32 188mm LSD:

    Early Clutch type
    Later Clutch Type:
    Torsen; Gear type

4 clutch conversion issues of note:

Early and Late model LSD's have slightly different internal plates, bellvue, etc.
Everything is direct interchange for the most part, just take careful notes of what you are doing when you tear down.

Simple CAREFUL math will let you know the factory centering of the Center unit; make sure your modifications do not alter the total stack or mis-align the center spiders or you will overstress one side.

I don't know what you're talking about, LSDs work by way of witchcraft and unicorns!

but thanks for trying to explain :)

How it stacks inside the housing, top items to bottom right top to bottom left

Underneath the center spider stack there was approximate 10.4mm of stack, approximate
        6.4 above the stack.

You will have to measure carefully and log all the data; don't just
Assume my measurement is yours as different model run diffs have different thickness spacers and slightly different washer stacks.

Some people cut multiple center lock options into the housing

        Others play stacking games;

This is me building a nasty too many clutches overlocking diff for my own drifting use. PLEASE IGNORE DIAGRAM BEHIND, they are incorrect on purpose to get those who cannot read well or think deeply about diagrams!

Thanks, maybe you can elaborate on the early vs late 188mm diffs?

Are all 3.15-4.45 available in EARLY and LATE style?

            this specifically -

"IF you are thinking about doing a clutch pack +1 or +2 upgrade, think again - its not as easy as it is with a 3.15-4.45++ high ratio LSD unit."

the 2.79-3.07 units have a FAT cover vs the 3.15-4.45 (more common unit) with thin cover.

late and early style is the most common in 3.15-4.45 offset

thin cover takes 3-4 clutch discs without machining

              thin one is 3.15-4.45+
              thick one is 2.79-3.07

the overall is same, bearing is sunk on 2.79-3.07 LSD

40% accel lock and 25% deccel lock bias center section

This style diff has no spring
Washers, a stack spacer lives at end of case.

Un sprung non preloaded style leads to more increased clutch wear but more contact between clutches/dogs.

Un sprung more frequent rebuild interval. This also specs reference to drag setting to setup

Oiling groove for increased thermal transfer to center, x bars are a different style also.

E30 x bars are actually stronger as more material design, they will take 1,000rwhp on the strip.

Standard e36 LSD units has no extra groove for oiling center sections, sprung dog/clutch stacks to add preload (adjust clearances) and allow the LSD to stay effective longer when items wear. This is one of the reasons that static lock up can be measured, with the asym lsd unit's non-sprung style of center cartridge the clutches/ plate thicknesses have to be speced to add this loading- otherwise this funky fancy diff can = Open diff when one wheel is airborne. Lol

hey! guess it is impossible to swap thin cover into 2.xx diff housing, to make 4 plate lsd, because the overall length would be too much? logically thinking it is, but just wanted to make sure, cause 25% locking for active drifting is really not enough :(

The end bearing surface would need to be sunk down 7mm and then the internal spider gear touching area would also be affected and not work :(

4 clutch can be done like Oem! Springless

how would that affect preload? guess it could be zero to 100% depending on thickness..
am reading your discussion in other topic, but didn't really see that..

                          yes.

some OEM ZF LSD is adjusted preload this way (euro spec OPEL, Alfa Romeo)

some OEM ZF LSD is preloaded with springs. both work - is just load :)

some pictures of 4 disc non-preload sprung z3m OEM LSD unit is posted on another thread "z3m lsd mythbusters"

                          its stack is:
BOttom->top of cartridge when top cap unbolted:

spacer / dog / clutch / dog / clutch / center ramp angle with 40/25% asym locking / clutch / dog / clutch / dog / top cap

Wangan are you capable of replacing the bearings on a diff? How hard is it?
Would you do it for some cash?
