I know this is an old thread, as I came across it doing some research, but based on your description and the pics you've posted, it appears that your vibration dampener is installed incorrectly. It should be on the drive shaft side of the assembly.

oh and i never responded to this. yea mine is a 87! peep my build thread. its in my sig. it goes into further detail on how i ended up fixing it. the MAIN problem was I was afraid to make another mistake. go figure.lol
I didnt wanna touch the nuts that held the tranny to guibo, and then the bolts spin where i can reach them there also.

looking back at it it was kinda of silly but i wasnt the only one.

and devon im not disagreeing with you on the bentley manual. it prolly would help but the exhaust wasnt the problem at all. I did it without taking the manifold out. I didnt have hardware or money to buy any. havnt worked in over a month so it made things more difficult and it made it so I COULD NOT MAKE ANOTHER MISTAKE. i literally couldnt afford to. and i need my car for work. it was a real catch 22 cituation

haha. your funny. i couldnt figure it out cause the balancer was there. i knew dropping my exhaust would make it a little easier but theyre OLD ASS BOLTS in the manifold. I wasnt even trying to mess with those and they snap causing another problem. if you read the previous posts you would clearly see my exhaust wasnt the problem.HAHAHAHAHAHA

    read my man...read!!

no shit, it's a lot less difficult than trying to do everything with much poorer access

Well, many of us including myself are all new at this too so I totally know what you're saying and going thru :) I've removed my complete exhaust before working on removing the driveshaft and that took me days to figure out too. Fun stuff!

yea...because im new to this shit it took me 5 days to figure it out.lol I kept trying random tools to get back there with and me and a friend got the bot on the nut while it was in the cover somehow.

it was such a pain just getting the guibo like it is in the pic so i could get the wrench behind it. Sucked sooo bad. It would have been much easier i think if i could have taken out my headers, remove the cat, & lower the csb enough to slide the guibo out that shield thing

driveshafts and stupid "harmonic balancers" suck....

I finally got it yesterday and took my car for a the first spin since new motor and tranny mounts. My motor mounts were fucked!!!!

anyway, to finally get to the nut holding the driveshaft to the guibo I had to lower my muffler all the way, lower the tranny as much as possible, unbolt CSB so the driveshaft could hang down and then unscrew the bolt behind that, compressing the driveshaft just a little bit, but enough for me to get to the back where the nuts were hidden away. This took me about 5hrs by myself.

vice grips on the bolt behind the CSB baaarely fit so I would only get a tiny turn, then have to go back out from underneath the car and take it out of gear, then go back underneath the car and rotate the driveshaft to where the vice grips would lock on, then get back out from under the car, put it in gear, crawl back underneath and then get my 1/4 of rotation and start the process over & over & over.lol

What ive learned after all this is I will NEVER touch the damn bolts that attach the driveshaft to the guibo Uness the guibo is already out. The driveshaft is a bitch to get out if the exhaust isnt completely out the way.

I may have used a small adjustable wrench to hold the nuts on the back of the balancer. You shouldnt be having this much trouble. Or use a small vice grips to hold the nut while you thread the bolt into it.

if it were that simple i woulda been done by now. holding anything back there to remove the driveshaft from the tranny is impossible for me. I cant keep the nuts in the back from rotating. again..they keep spinning inside the balancer!

Anyone have a specific tool they used to hold down the nut in the backside of the balancer!? I need to get back to work soon and need my car.lol this sucks

I dont even need to read anything, I saw YOUR posted PHOTO and already have the diagnosis.

remove entire thing FROM the transmission with a 30mm thinwall as posted, scrap the old style balancer/studs and then re-install.

if you have to cut the hardware off, SO BE IT. you need new hardware and to remove the balancer.

    wait, wait

so in my 1st pic..the nuts facing out are facing that way because those bolts WONT TURN IN THE BACK (tucked hidden behind guibo balancer) if i try to take the nuts off. I cant get anything to hold the bolt back there so if i go to turn the nut and the bolt spins im fucked with another bolt..andright now im having the worst time tightening just one.lol

I tried loosening just the face of the driveshaft bolt and it fell out. I dont want to try and loosen that nut and the bolt behind spins, leaving me unable to access that bot behind th shield and stuck with 2. 'Cause then it will wiggle out like my drive shaft bolt did and ill be even more screwed.lol
Thanks for the help tho..it sounds like u have actually had to work around a shield like this. If the bolt attached to the tranny flanges or whatever like my other pic wont move imma try it! let me know

maybe try rotating the driveshaft so its at a different angle?

    or just buy a bentley.
did the cars u worked on have the balancer covering the back of the guibo? with this cover here it makes things sooo much more dificult.

and i just thought of this..everyone keeps saying use an open ended wrench..so either my car is a one of a kind freak of germany, which I doubt or i was using the 16mm wrench the wrong way

can anyone explain how they used the 16mm open ended wrench to get between the balancer shield thing the back of the tranny??

Thanks to everyone for the advice tho.
I dont mean to sound like a bitch. I guess im just frustrated everyone keeps saying use a open ended wrench and thats the worst tool out of all of em ive tried.lol it wouldnt even touch the recessed nut. my guibo balancer covers the back of the shit just enough to where im pushing and pushing on the wrench but it wont pry on to the nut!
